They are burying their dead in Syria and the funerals are happening in greater numbers since the start of the conflict.

According to United Nations figures at least 93,000 have been killed, a rise of 30,000 since last November.

The report highlighted the plight of children caught in the killing fields.

“The killings of close to 7,055 minors, including at least 1,729 children under 10 years old, have been documented. There are also well-documented cases of individual children being tortured and executed, and entire families, including babies, being massacred – which, along with this devastatingly high death toll, is a terrible reminder of just how vicious this conflict has become,” explained Navi Pillay UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

The sharpest increases in deaths since November last year were recorded in the administrative provinces which surround Damascus and Aleppo. The UN figures are based on data from the Syrian government and seven human rights monitoring groups.

The UN fears the numbers of dead could be greater. The reports said at least 38,000 reported killings had been excluded because records – which require the victim’s full name and date and location of death – were incomplete.
