The Swiss parliament has effectively killed off a bill designed to sidestep secrecy laws to allow banks to release clients’ details.

The lower house voted two-to-one against a debate even though the upper house backed it.

The Swiss government warned that without the law banks may be sued by US authorities chasing wealthy American tax dodgers.

Violent protests in Brazil against transport fare… 14/06/2013 11:16 CET

Two of Brazil’s biggest cities, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro have agreed to reverse increases in public transport fares that have triggered mass protests.

The separate decisions followed another day of demonstrations and rioting.

Brazil has not seen anything like it in recent times, and governments both local and national are trying to diffuse the anger.

São Paulo’s governor, Geraldo Alckmin said he understood the need for good public transport:

“We will carry the burden of the budgetary costs of the states, making an adjustment in the area of investment, and by tightening our belts. But I do understand transportation is important, and that quality collective transportation working at a high capacity is a priority.”

At one point some protesters got inside Fortaleza stadium during the Brazil v Mexico Confederations Cup game carrying placards to get their message across.

It is unsure if the reversed price hike will work. The initial anger has grown into nationwide protests against poor public services, inflation and the billions being spent on staging next year’s World Cup.
