Sochi 2014 ambassador, Ilya Averbukh, displays the Olympic torch (RIA Novosti / Vladimir Astapkovich)The torches for the Sochi 2014 Olympic and Paralympic flame relays have been presented in the Russian capital.­Sochi 2014 ambassadors Tatyana Navka, Natalia Vodianova, Ilya Averbukh and Olesya Vladykina took part in the ceremony at the GUM shopping center just meters away from Red Square.The torch shape resembles the feather of a firebird, which is a regular character in many Russian fairytales.   They were developed by a group of Russian designers and engineers, led by Vladimir Pirozhkov and Andrey Vodyanik. The Olympic and Paralympic torches are identical in shape and size and only differ in color.The Olympic torch is made in the traditional Russian sport color of red, while the Paralympic is sky blue to symbolize the strength and spirit of the Paralympic Movement.The torch casing is made of aluminum alloy, with the handle and central insert moulded from high-duty polymer. Each torch is 0.95 meter long and weighs about 1.8 kilograms. The weight and center of gravity are designed for maximum ease of use while running. The design also provides for reliable burning in strong wind, frost or any other bad weather conditions.14,000 Olympic and over a 1,000 Paralympic torches will be produced for the Sochi 2014 Olympic Games relay, which will start on October 7.
