Retired Bishop Desmond Tutu welcomed Barack Obama to his HIV Foundation clinic on the US president’s final day in South Africa.

The fight against Aids along with trade have been two key projects pursued by the president on his three nation Africa trip.

Later at Cape Town university he unveiled a multi billion euro initiative to boost the availability of electricity on a continent where only one in three people have access.

“Access to electricity is fundamental to opportunity in this age,” said President Obama. “It is the light that children study by, the energy that allows an idea to be transformed into a real business, the lifeline for families to meet their most basic needs. And it’s the connection that is needed to plug Africa into the grid of the global economy.”

The entire trip has been overshadowed by concern for former president Nelson Mandela who remains critically ill in hospital.

A visit by Obama with his family to Robben Island where Mandela spent most of the 27 years he was jailed for his role in fighting apartheid was described by the US leader as a deeply humbling moment .
