An 8.0 magnitude earthquake has struck off the Solomon Islands, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The quake was followed by a 6.4-magnitude aftershock in the South Pacific, according to a USGS report.
Sea level readings reportedly indicate that a tsunami formed after the quake, and that it may be destructive near the temblor’s epicenter. A tsunami warning has been issued for the South Pacific Islands by the U.S. Tsunami Warning Center, Reuters reports.
