Republicans’ tax insanity

On Sunday’s “Meet the Press,” Claire McCaskill pointed out that she’d met Grover Norquist for the first time backstage, then asked a pretty good question: “Who is he?”Her point is that Norquist’s visibility and reputation dramatically exceeds his actual political clout. It’s understandable how this has happened. Republicans have evolved over the past three decades into a staunchly anti-tax party, and Norquist is a colorful and endlessly quotable symbol of this absolutism – one who happens to live and work in close proximity to much of the national political press corps. So he gets an awful lot of face time on television and it can sometimes seem as if he and his anti-tax pledge are the reason no Republican member of Congress has voted for a tax hike in over two decades. But, as Tim Noah wrote last week, Norquist’s actual power in Washington and within the GOP is illusory. In terms of stature and public prominence, he’s been a major beneficiary of the party’s opposition to tax increases – but he hasn’t been the driving force behind it. The real story of the GOP’s modern evolution on taxes played out in several stages, from the late 1970s to the early 1990s.Continue Reading… Read More

Anonymous Launches #OpHuntHunter to Destroy Hunter Moore and His Revenge Porn Empire

(Photo: Vimeo)
It was only a matter of time before Anonymous, the hacker collective known for being protectors of the free Internet as well as hardcore anti-bullying advocates, jumped into the revenge porn fray. Last night they announced #OpHuntHunter, an offshoot of the group’s anti-bullying operation that seeks to “hold Hunter Moore accountable for his actions.”
Mr. Moore caused an Internet shitstorm last week when he told us that his new site, HunterMoore.TV, would include an address submission field where users can submit addresses alongside naked photos of their exes. Though he’s since gone back on that claim, Anonymous has taken it upon themselves to dox Mr. Moore, publishing personal information such as his home address and the name of his parents. They’ve also published the personal info of Andrew Myers, the proprietor of Is Anyone Up copycat site Is Anyone Back.
In the release, Anonymous writes:
This is a call to all of anonymous. We Will hold hunter moore accountable for his actions, we will protect anyone who is victimized by abuse of our internet, we will prevent the stalking, rape, and possible murders as byproduct of his sites.
Operation Anti-Bully. Operation Hunt Hunter engaged. We are Anonymous, we are Legion, we do not Forgive, we do not Forget, Hunter Moore, EXPECT US.
It’s an interesting move by Anonymous, which is known for “doxing” people–publishing their personal info–much in the same way Mr. Moore’s new site will. Still, given its powerful anti-bullying stance in the wake of Amanda Todd’s suicide, Anonymous’ attack on revenge porn seems like a natural next step.
We’ve reached out to Mr. Moore for his reaction to Anonymous’ news, and will update when we hear back. Read More

Grover Norquist Targeted In Fiscal Cliff Debate, Denounces ‘Sugar Plum’ Republicans

WASHINGTON — With Republicans showing signs of bending on taxes for the richest Americans as the nation nears the so-called fiscal cliff, Democrats mounted an effort Wednesday to put a little more public pressure on the GOP and its anti-tax pledge. The cliff is the combination of expiring Bush-era tax cuts and mandated budget cuts that start in January. President Barack Obama and Democrats propose extending all the tax cuts for income under $250,000, while letting rates revert to the Clinton-era 39.6 percent for the top 2 percent of earners. Most Republicans have adamantly opposed any such tax hike, adhering to a “no new taxes” pledge they signed with anti-tax champion Grover Norquist’s Americans for Tax Reform.
