Military sexual assault prevention officer accused of running prostitution ring

Two senior officials at the Pentagon and a Capitol Hill staffer briefed on the case confirmed to USA Today that a sergeant serving at the Texas military installation, whose name has not been released, is under investigation for abusive sexual contact, forcing a subordinate into prostitution and sexually assaulting at least two others. The officer has now been relieved of his duties, though charges had yet to be filed. The sergeant oversaw a sexual assault prevention program at the battalion level, and was responsible for a unit of some 800 soldiers. Both Pentagon officials who confirmed the investigation, including inquiries into the alleged prostitution ring, spoke on condition of anonymity as the case is still ongoing.Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel reacted with “frustration, anger and disappointment over these troubling allegations and the breakdown in discipline and standards they imply,” Pentagon press secretary George Little said on Tuesday, following official acknowledgment of the investigation at Fort Hood. The announcement also comes on the heels of another blow to the armed forces, adding to an ongoing narrative showing a widespread culture of sexual abuse in the American military. Earlier in May, Lt. Col. Jeffrey Krusinski, the officer in charge of the Air Force’s sexual abuse prevention program based at the Pentagon, was arrested for drunkenly groping a woman. Krusinski is set to appear in court in July for sexual battery. To compound the unwanted attention, Krusinski’s arrest came the same week that the Pentagon released an annual report revealing a 35% increase in unreported sexual assault incidents over two years, totaling 26,000 up from 19,300 in 2010.Reported sexual assaults of both men and women in the military rose to 3,374 last year, up from 3,192 a year earlier, according to that same Pentagon report. About a quarter of those who were assaulted and received medical attention declined to press charges, which officials cited as an indicator of victims’ fears of retribution.”Tragically, the depth of the sexual assault problem in our military was already overwhelmingly clear before this latest highly disturbing report,” said Sen. Carl Levin, (D-MI), who currently chairs the personnel panel of the US Armed Services Committee, in response to Tuesday’s revelation.Air Force officials have already been criticized for their handling of sexual assault issues. Air Force Chief of Staff Mark Welsh was blasted by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) for blaming “hook-up culture” for contributing to continuing sexual abuse problems.”To say this report is disturbing would be a gross understatement. For the second time in a week we are seeing someone who is supposed to be preventing sexual assault being investigated for committing that very act,” said Gillibrand.”We have to do better by the men and women serving and assure them that they will not be attacked by their colleagues,” she added. In response to this latest incident, US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel on Tuesday ordered the armed services to immediately “re-train, re-credential and re-screen” tens of thousands of recruiters and military sexual assault prevention officers. Sandy Hook Elementary: Tear it down and build new school on same site, panel says

“We came together as 28, and I hope we can come together as a community to rebuild the spirit of our community and build the school together,” said panel member and vice chair of the local Board of Education Laura Roche. She added that it had been “very emotional and very hard” to come to a decision about the school’s future. Before the demolition and rebuilding can take place, the proposal must go before the local school board and be approved by residents in a referendum. If approved, officials said construction could begin in spring 2014 and the new building could open in January 2016.Plans under consideration call for a building with a shape that resembles homes and barns built in Newtown in the 1700s and 1800s, and 26 glass cupolas on the roof with spires “pointed towards heaven” in remembrance of the 26 victims, a report compiled for the task force stated. Not all Newtown residents are in favor of the project. Many believe the school should simply be renovated, because tearing it down would be a victory for evil.Others are adamantly against having students return to the existing building. Brian Engel, whose 6-year-old daughter Olivia died in the shooting, told the task force last week that he didn’t want Olivia’s younger brother to attend school in the same place where she died. Several teachers also told the task force that they didn’t want to return.Sandy Hook’s 430 students are currently attending a renovated school renamed Sandy Hook Elementary School in the neighboring town of Monroe. They are expected to remain there until a new school is built in Newtown.A regular school day turned tragic for the Newtown students on December 14 when gunman Adam Lanza opened fire with an assault rifle after killing his mother at their home. He killed himself as police arrived at the school. The massacre sparked a national debate about gun control and second amendment rights.Police have not disclosed the possible motives for the killings, but officials have said that Lanza showed an interest in other mass killings and played violent video games. While Newtown residents wait to have their say on what happens to Sandy Hook, they are encouraged by the prospect of the school returning to how it once was. “It’s been a place for learning, for kids to grow up and it’s going to go back to that,” parent Daniel Krauss said. Prosecutors mulling execution for Ohio kidnapper over forced miscarriages

A police report obtained by The New York Times states that immediately after Cleveland police broke into Castro’s residence on Monday, Michelle Knight – who, unlike Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus remains hospitalized – disclosed that Castro had impregnated her several times.“She stated that Ariel would make her abort the baby,” read the police report. Castro would starve Knight for weeks on end, then repeatedly punch her in the stomach “until she miscarried.”Timothy J. McGinty, the Cuyahoga County prosecutor, has stated that the forced miscarriages could constitute grounds for seeking the death penalty against 52-year-old Castro. An official who spoke with the Times anonymously also provided further detail of the conditions under which the three women were held for close to a decade. Initially, Castro had kept the victims chained up in his basement, eventually allowing them access to the second floor. They “were brought into the room and out of the room, when the chains were on, when the chains were off,” as well as being occasionally given the priviledge of access to a toilet and a shower, said the official.”The law of Ohio calls for the death penalty for those most depraved criminals who commit aggravated murder during the course of a kidnapping,” McGinty said at a news conference on Thursday. The prosecutor’s office now intends to pursue charges of kidnapping and sexual assault as well as aggravated murder, the latter of which could carry the death penalty.According to the anonymous official who spoke with the Times, FBI specialists have already spent hours with each of the women, gathering necessary information to base charges against Castro.Their captivity was “depraved beyond your imagination,” said the official.Michelle Knight went missing in 2002 at the age of around 19, while Amanda Berry disappeared in 2003 at 16 and Gina DeJesus went missing a year later at age 14.”The only opportunity, after interviewing the young ladies, to escape was the other day when Amanda escaped,” Cleveland Deputy Police Chief Ed Tomba said on Thursday.”They don’t believe that they’ve been outside that home for the last 10 years respectively,” he added. “They were not in one room, but they did know each other and they did know each other was there.” Read More
