Covered at Reason 24/7: Judge Rejects Fort Hood Shooter’s Guilty Plea
Major Nidal Hasan was charged with 13 counts of
premeditated murder within a month of the 2009 Fort Hood shooting
and arraigned in 2011. A trial was set for last year but has faced
multiple delays, including when Hasan refused to shave his beard as
required by military rules. Now the rules are prohibiting his plea
from being accepted.
From the Washington Times:
The Fort Hood soldier charged with 13 counts of
premeditated murder in the 2009 military post rampage cannot plead
guilty, a judge ruled Wednesday.
The Associated Press reports that ;Maj. Nidal Hasan’s attorneys
said he wanted to plead guilty. He’s barred, however, by Army
rules. Military judges can’t take guilty pleas from defendants who
face the death penalty, AP says. So attorneys tried to get the
judge to accept a guilty plea for 13 counts of unpremeditated
murder — to no avail, AP reports.
No word on whether his attempted guilty plea might affect his
rank
or paycheck.

Judge enters not guilty plea for Aurora shooter
CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) — The judge in the deadly Colorado movie theater shooting case entered a not guilty plea on behalf of James Holmes on Tuesday after the former graduate student’s defense team said he was not ready to enter one.If Holmes is convicted, he could be executed or spend the rest of his life in prison. Judge William Sylvester said Holmes, 25, can change his plea to not guilty by reason of insanity later, if he chooses.Such a change could be the only way Holmes could avoid life in prison or execution.Prosecutors, for their part, have not said yet whether they will pursue the death penalty, announcing Tuesday that they will make their decision known on April 1.The judge set Aug. 5 for the start of the trial. Prosecutors and defense attorneys declined comment. As he has done in past hearings, Holmes sat silently through Tuesday’s proceedings. He wore a red jail jumpsuit and sported a thick, bushy beard and unkempt dark brown hair. When he walked into the courtroom, he looked at his parents, James and Arlene Holmes. They sat silently at the front of the room and left without comment after the hearing.Continue Reading… … Read More
Mitt Romney to resurface at CPAC
This year’s Conservative Political Action Conference, the biggest and most important annual American conservative movement event, will feature a speech by Mr. Mitt Romney, a.k.a. “the Future of the Republican Party.” This will be Romney’s first public speaking appearance since he lost the 2012 presidential election despite leading in all unskewed polls. Maybe he will be fat and have a beard? Or maybe he will just look the same, as he has since 1971.
As Elspeth Reeve points out, Mitt Romney was said to have “little interest in helping the Republican Party rebuild and re-brand itself” as recently as last December. And speaking at CPAC is a great way of really emphasizing how uninterested Mitt Romney is in helping the Republican party re-brand itself. “I, a stiff rich twit, still represent this party,” Romney will probably say. “Sorry.”
