French singer and songwriter Georges Moustaki has died after a long illness. He was 79.

Greek-born Moustaki arrived in Paris in 1951 and will be remembered by many for his songs celebrating liberty and his collaborations with Edith Piaf.

French Culture Minister Aurelie Filippetti hailed an “artist with convictions who conveyed humanist values… and a great poet.”

Twitter was also flooded with tributes to the singer, who many said had defined their childhoods.

Russia and Azerbaijan are joining forces to investigate a Eurovision scandal that saw votes for Russia’s entry vanish.

Moscow’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has described as “outrageous” the revelations by Azerbaijan that although its country’s voters had put Dina Garipova’s ballad second, she got “nul points” instead of ten.

At a joint news conference in Moscow, Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov spoke of his government’s “shock” when the data was published.

On Monday Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev ordered an inquiry. The head of the country’s public broadcaster said he was “very worried and surprised” by the breakdown of the votes.

Eurovision fans in each of the 39 countries voted by text or phone and their collective votes counted 50-50 with those of a professional jury.

Russia’s ten “lost” votes made no difference to the final outcome. Its song came fifth, 17 points behind fourth-placed Norway.

Hey, lady. You, lady. Beloved celebrity of my generation, icon with a career spanning decades. I saw a story about you today and I was excited, because I’ve always been your fan. Then I looked at it. And I just want to know one thing. Girl, what the eff have you done to your face?I’ve tried to ignore it. I’ve tried not to say anything. Not just to you, today, but to lots of female celebrities, for years. I want to believe that if you were to go out and get a tattoo that said “I LOVE CHEESE” across your forehead, I would support your right to do whatever makes you happy. And as someone who keeps a stock of hair color in her closet in case there’s ever a Feriapocalypse, and who doesn’t own an item of makeup or moisturizer that doesn’t boldly feature the word “youth” on the packaging, I’m not one to espouse growing older gracefully.
