Hvordan lyder fremtidens radio?

“1600 Penn”: A political satire that’s short on wonkiness, big on wackiness

There are a lot of fictional politicians milling about the television these days. There’s Leslie Knope, State’s Attorney Peter Florrick, President Fitzgerald Grant, and Vice-Presidents Selina Meyer and William Walden. Until recently, Kelsey Grammar was the Mayor of Chicago on “Boss” and Sigourney Weaver was a version of Hilary Clinton on “Political Animals.” There are various defense and state department officials on “Last Resort,” a mayoral race in “Nashville,” and soon there will be all of Capitol Hill in Netflix’s forthcoming “House of Cards.” As of last night there are also the Gilchrists, America’s first family and the stars of “1600 Penn,” a new sitcom which sneak-previewed on NBC and will begin airing regularly in January.Continue Reading… Read More

Obama in 2000: “Pervasiveness of guns in this country contributes to violence”

Back in 2000, I found out what Barack Obama really thinks about guns.Obama was an Illinois state senator, running for Congress in an urban district, so he didn’t have to worry about appealing to rural voters, let alone red states. The most important gun issue he faced was his failure to fly back to Springfield from a Hawaiian vacation to vote on an anti-gun bill, because his then-18-month-old daughter Malia had an ear infection. The Safe Neighborhoods Act — which Obama supported — would have made illegal possession of a firearm a felony. It failed by five votes, but a compromise version passed the next year.A month before the primary — which he lost to Rep. Bobby Rush — I interviewed Obama for the Chicago Reader. We mostly talked about the missed vote, which Obama’s opponents were using as an example of his callowness, but then I asked him about his philosophy on gun control. Here is a previously unpublished transcript of those remarks, which did not make the 2000 piece:Continue Reading… Read More

Chicago University receives Indiana Jones’ mail

Still of Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. The University of Chicago has received a puzzling package addressed to “Henry Walton Jones Jr”, the real name of Indiana Jones character from the movies. University officials haven’t decided what do to with it or where it came from. The package contained a replica of a journal featured in the film “Raiders of the Lost Ark” had no return address on it. According to the Chicago Tribune it was delivered to the university’s admissions department last week. The University has turned to the internet for inspiration and clues. Users have suggested the parcel might have been meant for the film franchise fan and simply fell out of its package while being processed at mail facilities. Another suggestion is that the package might be a part of an “alternate reality” game among the students. The Indiana Jones’ makers Luscafilm say they have nothing to do with the package, the Associated Press reports. Read More
