France has lifted it’s objection to trade talks between the European Union and the United States, clearing the way for the world’s most ambitious free trade agreement.

Committed to defending its arts sector, France had been refusing to get on board unless cultural industries – such as television, movies and online entertainment – were excluded.

Meeting in Luxembourg, EU officials announced that the French demand had been met.

French Trade Minister Nicole Bricq said:“I’m not talking about victory, because I don’t want to. In negotiations we’re not alone. I’m all about European solidarity. The only thing regret is that, sometimes, I’ve been under the impression that some parties were negotiating directly with the United States.”

With the French road block out of the way, European leaders are expected to launch talks with US President Barack Obama at the G8 Summit on June 17-18 in Northern Ireland.

Forty-eight hours after lift off from the Gobi desert, three Chinese astronauts have successfully docked the Tiangong-1 space lab.

Chinese media reports that it is the latest step towards the development of the country’s own space station.

The astronauts plan on spending two weeks in the lab making it China’s longest manned space mission.

The docking was fully automated, though manually docking tests will be carried out during their stay.

The mission is the latest show of China’s ambitions to breach the final frontier, space. Though they have come a long way in recent years they still lag behind Russia and the US in the space race. They aim to send a man to the moon, but not before 2020.

Wang Yaping, China’s second woman in space, will present a lecture to Chinese schoolchildren from the station.

China latest manned spacecraft has taken off as the country continues efforts to develop a space station.

The crew of three, which includes China’s second female astronaut, are on the Shenzhou 10 which blasted off from a remote site in the Gobi desert.

The 15-day mission will be the longest time Chinese astronauts have spent in space and China’s President oversaw the launch personally.

“You are the pride of the Chinese people and this mission is both glorious and sacred,” he said.

Once in orbit, the craft will dock with the Tiangong 1, a trial space laboratory module in order for the crew to practice manual and automatic dockings.

China’s space programme has come a long way since 1949 when its late leader Mao Zedong lamented that the country could not even launch a potato into space.

Now Beijing has raised the possibility of a manned moon mission, but not before 2020.

Global warming to cost coal-fired power generators $1.8tn – IAE

Last year carbon emissions from fossil fuels hit a record 31.6 bn tonnes, up 1.4%, according to the IEA’s World Energy Outlook report. That’s despite positive figures from the two largest green house gas emitters the US and China. American emissions of carbon dioxide from fossil fuels fell by 200 million tonnes to levels last seen in the mid-1990s due to a transition from coal power to natural gas and renewable energy, the Guardian reports. European emissions fell 50 million tonnes due to economic contraction and renewable energy growth, despite an increase in coal energy use. The Chinese growth of emissions by 300 million tonnes is the smallest over the past decade as China continues to invest into diversifying its energy sources and installing more renewables and more energy efficiency. The agency says the energy sector accounts for two-thirds of global CO2 emissions that are believed to fuel climate change. The IEA warns the world is on track for the temperature increase of up to 5.3 degrees Celsius by 2100 despite the UN target of no more than 2 degrees Celsius increase. The agency calls on countries to minimise carbon emissions, stop building coal power stations and increase energy efficiency to tame the global warming within the 2 degree increase. Under this scenario, the world will leave two thirds of its fossil fuel reserves untapped before 2050, the agency reports. “When the Stone Age came to an end, it wasn’t because there was no stones anymore, but because we had different technologies,” Bloomberg quotes Maria Van der Hoeven, the executive director of the IEA.  “There’s no need to use coal for our energy supply if we have other options.” Revenues from nuclear power stations and alternative energy will increase leading coal power generators to lose up to $1.8tn in the next 20 years, the IEA reports. China – Beijing-based documentary filmmaker held incommunicado

Reporters Without Borders is appalled to learn that Du Bin, a Beijing-based documentary filmmaker and former New York Times photographer, has been held incommunicado since 31 May. A newly-completed a documentary by Du Bin about a labour camp for women in Masanjia, in the northeastern province of Liaoning, was released in Hong Kong on 1 May. Entitled “Above the Ghosts’ Heads: The Women of Masanjia Labour Camp,” the film is banned in mainland China. “The Chinese authorities must give their (…) Read More
