“It wasn’t your fault”

I haven’t been able to watch footage of Boston. When it comes on TV, I can watch a little bit, but then I have to walk away. The picture of Martin Richard, the little boy who died, brings tears to my eyes, because I know what his parents are going through. I lost my 4-year-old daughter, Ashley, in the Oklahoma City bombings, along with my husband’s parents, LaRue and Luther. Eighteen years later, I’m still living with the trauma. The trauma never goes away.I was at work when the bomb went off. Everything on my desk shifted. In my naiveté, I wondered: Did one of the silos blow up? We turned on the news, and saw the chaos, the building torn away. I thought, “Thank God no one I love is in that building.”My husband’s parents were taking care of Ashley that day. My husband’s father had an appointment at the Social Security Building at 9 o’clock, which I didn’t realize was in the federal building. When it finally sunk in what was happening, I collapsed in on myself. It’s a very hopeless feeling, not knowing.Continue Reading… Read More

Review: Google laptop is impressive, but may disappoint some

SIEM REAP, Cambodia (AP) — Google’s first high-end laptop, the Chromebook Pixel, is an impressive machine. It feels light and comfortable in my hands and on my lap. Its high-resolution display makes photos look sharp and video come to life. From a hardware standpoint, it’s everything I’d want a laptop to be.But the Pixel isn’t very practical — at least not yet — for most people. It works well when you have a steady Internet connection, but can’t do much once you lose that connection. And because it uses Google’s own operating system, it doesn’t run enough software yet to replace your other machines.I brought the Pixel along for a nearly three-week trip to Thailand and Cambodia, where I knew I wouldn’t have the type of round-the-clock access I’m used to in the U.S. I was surprised by how much I could do, but quickly got frustrated when I couldn’t do more.Such frustration doesn’t come cheap. Prices for the Pixel start at $1,299, just $200 less than a MacBook with a comparable screen and the ability to do much more offline. A higher-end Pixel with cellular access costs $150 more than the basic model and is scheduled to start shipping Monday.Continue Reading… Read More

“Mad Men” Season 6 poster gives a nod to the 1960s

Gearing up for season 6 of AMC’s “Mad Men,” the series took a note from ad man Don Draper and commissioned a poster from famed illustrator Brian Sanders, a nod to the 1960s-era setting of the season. The New York Times reports on the vision:”Matthew Weiner, inspired by a childhood memory of lush, painterly illustrations on T.W.A. flight menus, decided to turn back the promotional clock. He pored over commercial illustration books from the 1960s and ’70s and sent images to the show’s marketing team, which couldn’t quite recreate the look he was after. ‘Finally,’ he said, ‘they just looked up the person who had done all these drawings that I really loved, and they said: ‘Hey, we’ve got the guy who did them. And he’s still working. His name is Brian Sanders.’ ”Continue Reading… Read More

SimCity hotfix to disable non-critical gameplay features

Electronic Arts is still working around the clock to resolve issues surrounding the launch of SimCity earlier this week. In what is a surprise to nobody except EA, the servers required to play the DRM-laden title haven’t been able to cope with the type of demand that a high-profile game… Read More
