Rand Paul alleges CIA smuggled weapons through Benghazi

On Wednesday a Congressional committee heard testimonies from witnesses of the September 11, 2012 attack, but eight months after the fact many questions still remain unanswered.  Sen. Paul weighed in on the event as well this week, but in doing so challenged the administration of US President Barack Obama and particularly Hillary Clinton, the former Department of State secretary at the helm of the agency at the time of the attack and another rumored candidate in the 2016 election. In an interview aired on CNN Thursday evening, Sen. Paul said he hasn’t ruled out the possibility that last year’s attack unfolded as a result of a secret arms trade. The confusion in the immediate aftermath of the event — including unfounded admissions from America’s United Nations envoy Susan Rice that contradicted what is known today about the attack — could actually be a cover-up, the senator said.“I never have quite understood the cover-up — if it was intentional or incompetence,” he told host Erin Burnett. “But something went on. I mean, they had talking points that they were trying to make it out to be a movie when everybody seemed to be on the ground telling them it had nothing to do a movie. I don’t know if this was for political reasons.”In the wake of the attack, then-UN ambassador Susan Rice said the storming of the consulate resulted after an anti-Islamic video produced in the US ended up on YouTube. The government has since admitted her statement was false, but conflicting reports among Washington’s elite has led in part to Paul’s questioning of the incident.“I’ve actually always suspected that, although I have no evidence, that maybe we were facilitating arms leaving Libya going through Turkey into Syria,” he said.“Were they trying to obscure that there was an arms operation going on at the CIA annex?” Paul asked. “I’m not sure exactly what was going on, but I think questions ought to be asked and answered, and I’m a little curious when employees of the State Department are told by government officials they shouldn’t testify and then they are sort of sequestered and kept away from testimony, so I think there may be more to this.”This is not the first time either that Senator Paul raised questions about possible arms supplies under the CIA umbrella. During her testimony in the Senate, Rand Paul asked then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton whether the spy agency was sending weapons from Benghazi into other countries. Clinton replied that he would have to ask CIA officials about it. On Friday morning, Paul scolded the former State Department secretary in a Washington Times op-ed and said Clinton “should never hold high office again.”“My office is currently seeking out the witnesses and survivors of Benghazi to testify before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. To date, the Obama administration has refused to let them testify. Too many questions remain unanswered. Now, there are too many new questions,” Paul wrote. “The evidence we had in January already suggested that Mrs. Clinton ignored repeated requests for more security in Benghazi. The new evidence we have today  – and that continues to mount  – suggests that at the very least, Mrs. Clinton should never hold high office again.”Paul said during a Thursday radio interview that he’s “considering” a run for president in 2016. A Quinnipiac University poll published earlier the week found that Clinton would dominate the Democratic race, winning perhaps 65 percent of the party’s vote if she decides to run. Read More

First the confusion…then the reaction. After a man was arrested for shooting and injuring two national military police, known as carabinieri,
outside the government headquarters in Rome, the country’s Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister stepped up to handle his first task.

Angelino Alfano was thrust into the spotlight and quickly moved to reassure the country. Speaking at a press conference, he said:

“An initial examination of the incident suggests that this can be considered an isolated act. A new investigation has begun concerning this act.

“It’s my duty to say that the general situation of public order in Italy isn’t in any danger. But in any event, we’ve increased security measures in vulnerable locations,” added Alfano.

In a show of compassion and solidarity with the victims, Alfano paid a visit to the injured carabinieri. Italy has surely had more auspicious starts to a government that many have tipped to fail.

Colbert responds to Rove: No one’s trying to eat you

Karl Rove thinks that Stephen Colbert may have “anger management issues,” but Colbert assured him on last night’s “Colbert Report” that no one is trying to stab and eat him.Rove had responded to “Ham Rove,” the “dearly digested” ham version of himself, who served as Colbert’s chief strategist for his Super PAC – and who Colbert stabbed to death last year.“I don’t know whether that was working out his inner feelings, or encouraging maybe someone to maybe mimic him or just sort of being funny. But there was a little bit of anxiety in his stabs there,” Rove said in an interview with ABC News on Sunday.”Karl, there is no need for anxiety,” Colbert said Monday. “I am in no way encouraging anybody to stab Karl Rove. There is a big different between Karl Rove and Ham Rove.” But, he added, Easter is coming up, so “Karl, to avoid any confusion with Ham Rove, for the next week or so please avoid the urge to cover your face with pineapple rings.”Watch: Continue Reading… Read More

FTC Thinks Emphasizing That Four Loko Is 5 Drinks in One Can Will Encourage Moderation

This week the Federal Trade Commission
(FTC) ;issued
a final order compelling Phusion Projects, the manufacturer of the
fruity malt beverage Four Loko, to change its packaging so that
consumers will finally know how totally messed up you can get by
polishing off an entire 23.5-ounce can. Was there ever any real
confusion on this score? Since volume and alcohol content were
clearly listed on every can, and since the FTC complained that
Phusion Projects blatantly promoted Four Loko as a fast and
economical way to get drunk, probably not.
Yet somehow the FTC became convinced
that Phusion Products “represented, expressly or by implication,
that a 23.5 oz can of 11% or12% ABV Four Loko contains alcohol
equivalent to one or two regular, 12 oz beers.” It must have been a
pretty subtle implication, because if you look through the FTC’s
original
complaint you will see that the company never said anything to
that effect. “We do not agree with the FTC’s allegations regarding
these issues,” Phusion co-founder Jaisen Freeman
said in a statement, but “we consider this agreement a
practical way to move forward.” The main allegation against
Freeman’s company boils down to this: By putting 23.5 ounces in one
“nonresealable” container, Phusion Projects implied that it was OK
for one person to consume it all in one sitting, when public health
experts tell us you really shouldn’t do that.
A can of Four Loko contains less alcohol
than a bottle of Champagne and less alcohol than some big bottles
of craft beer. In terms of intoxicating power, it is equivalent to
a few cocktails—or, as the FTC prefers to put it, “4.7 regular
beers,” by which it means beers with an alcohol content of 5
percent. That is an amount people have been known to consume over
the course of an evening without any deleterious effects. But let
us accept the FTC’s premise that no one should be drinking a whole
can of Four Loko by himself. How do the packaging
changes it has foisted upon Phusion Projects serve to
discourage that allegedly reckless practice? First, Four Loko
containers henceforth will be resealable, which should be quite
effective if the desire to avoid waste, as opposed to the desire to
get wasted, is the main reason people drink the entire can. Second,
Four Loko containers will carry an “alcohol facts” panel listing,
in addition to the volume and strength information that was on the
old cans, “servings per container” (4.7) and serving size (five
ounces), accompanied by this statement: “According to the U.S.
Dietary ;Guidelines, a serving contains ;0.6 ounces of pure
alcohol.”
Assuming that Four Loko consumers care how many
ounces of pure alcohol the federal government deems to be a
serving, and assuming they are prepared to do the math required to
convert pure alcohol ounces into beverage ounces based on alcoholic
strength, that last piece of information will be very useful to
them. Likewise “serving size,” assuming they are pouring their malt
beverage into a measuring cup. As for the declaration that one can
is 4.7 servings, one can imagine how it might backfire. As I
suggested
in Reason ;last year, advertising that a can of Four
Loko is five drinks in one calls further attention to the product’s
most controversial attraction.
Apparently I was not the only person to think of that. The FTC
originally proposed
a more prominent statement saying, “This can has as much alcohol as
4.5 regular (12 oz. 5% alc/vol) beers.” ;But Reuters
reports that the commission thought better of that idea:

The FTC said it had earlier considered requiring alcohol
information on the fronts of cans. But it said some commentators
feared this could encourage binge drinking, by promoting Four Loko
as “an efficient, inexpensive way to become inebriated.”

Solution: Put the same information on the can, but make it so
inconspicuous that no one will notice it. This is the FTC’s idea of
a balanced approach to consumer protection.
The FTC’s order is the second federal crackdown on Four Loko.
The first, by the Food and Drug Administration, resulted in its
decaffeination, through a completely rational, science-based
process that I chronicled
in Reason ;two years ago. Read More
