Steven Spielberg to direct “American Sniper” film adaptation
The “American Sniper” project is moving forward, adding legendary director Steven Spielberg to its credits, reports THR. Spielberg will also co-produce the film, along with Andrew Lazar and Peter Morgan and actor Bradley Cooper.Cooper bought the rights to the film adaptation of Navy SEAL Chris Kyle’s book in May 2012, but fast-tracked the project after Kyle’s death in early 2013. Kyle was shot dead by veteran Eddie Routh, thought to have been struggling with PTSD.Cooper will star as Chris Kyle, and intends to use the role to illuminate high-profile issues, telling NPR’s Terry Gross that Kyle’s story “needs to be told and it’s also relevant on two fronts. One, gun control, and two, the need to address this — the many soldiers that are coming back with post-traumatic stress disorder.”Continue Reading… … Read More
Jason Collins: Black — and gay — like me
I’d never heard of Jason Collins when I saw a friend’s Facebook status earlier today announcing the news that he was gay. (I prefer college basketball over the NBA.) As I googled his name to find out more, one thought kept running through my mind: “Please be black.”I wanted Jason Collins to be black, because I knew what it would mean to black gay youth in this country. I wanted him to be black because I’m hyper-aware that the list of influential LGBT celebrities like Rachel Maddow, Anderson Cooper and Neil Patrick Harris is very white. Most important, I wanted Jason Collins to be black because I know exactly what it’s like to be a gay teenager with dark brown skin who comes out but cannot find anyone gay who looks like you on television. Or in magazines. Or on the news. These days, when I lecture about LGBT issues on college campuses and various other events, people often tell me I’m the only black person they’ve ever seen speak out for gay rights. The pride I feel is mixed with uneasiness because I wish that weren’t the case.Continue Reading… … Read More
First cell phone call placed 40 years ago
The mobile phone turned 40 on Wednesday, with no fanfare to mark the occasion in a market which seemed focused on new smartphones like the iPhone and a possible Facebook-themed device. The first mobile call was placed April 3, 1973, by Motorola engineer Martin Cooper, head of a team working on…
Michael Jackson’s doctor sings bizarre jailhouse serenade to Anderson Cooper
In what could charitably be termed an unusual PR move, Dr. Conrad Murray, Michael Jackson’s former personal physician, sang a song to CNN’s Anderson Cooper during a telephone interview Tuesday. Murray, who is currently serving a five year sentence on manslaughter charges stemming from…
The first cell phone call was placed 40 years ago today
It may be hard to believe but the first ever cellular phone call was made 40 years ago today. The call was placed by Martin Cooper, a Motorola employee at the time, on Sixth Avenue in midtown Manhattan. Interestingly enough, Cooper’s first public call in front of the press was… … Read More
CNN to replace “Anderson Cooper” re-airings with new show, “The Point”
Say this for the third-place cable news network: CNN’s unafraid of trying new things. This week, the network is to shake up its 10 p.m. hour, replacing a re-airing of the 8 p.m. “Anderson Cooper 360″ with a new show, “The Point.” That show is to be a panel discussion featuring commentators including ESPN’s Rick Reilly and inescapable ad guru Donny Deutsch. This week of experimenting with a new program appears to be an on-air tryout for what would be recently-installed CNN head Jeff Zucker’s first change to the prime-time lineup (though Zucker had reportedly wished to move 7 p.m. host Erin Burnett to the mornings). The week of “The Point” comes shortly after the announcement of a new morning show featuring Chris Cuomo, and CNN has also installed former ABC news star Jake Tapper in the afternoons.Continue Reading… … Read More
