A $5.25 all-beef hot dog at the Stang’s Hot Dogs and Sausages stand in the Corte Madera mall in Marin County, California, is labeled with enough buzzwords to satisfy the most discerning of foodies. “Contains no nitrates.” “Organic grass fed.” “Certified humane raised.” Its producer, Prather Ranch Meat Company, claims to be the most sustainably raised meat available, and Prather’s hot dog is the most popular item on Stang’s menu. “People pay extra for it,” says owner Jon Stanger. “The name Prather Ranch holds a lot of weight around here.”The sprawling and lovely 34,000-acre ranch headquarters is located at the northernmost corner of California, near the Oregon border, with the volcanic Mount Shasta providing a scenic backdrop for the sometimes thousands of grazing cows. Prather’s web site describes the operation as “a unique closed-herd operation that raises its own hay, breeds its own cattle and does its own slaughter and processing.” The ranch was one of the first ranches to be certified organic for beef products and to gain Certified Humane Raised and Handled approval.Continue Reading… … Read More
Tribal conflict in Kenya leaves more than 180 dead
TANA RIVER DELTA, Kenya — The first attacks began a year ago, pitting semi-nomadic Orma cattle herders against Pokomo maize farmers. There were a handful of deaths but nothing out of the ordinary in this baking hot corner of Kenya, where competition for that most precious resource — water — is fierce. The government did nothing as the ferocity and body counts of the tit-for-tat raids escalated: six dead in August, 54 a few weeks later, then 11, then 39 (including nine police officers). Finally the authorities stepped in, a curfew was imposed and the raids stopped, for a while. In December they began again: 32 Orma were killed in the village of Kipao just before Christmas. A few weeks ago, 11 Pokomo were killed in Kibusu. The toll is now more than 180, according to human rights groups. During the attacks women and children — some just babies — have been disproportionately targeted.Continue Reading… … Read More
Inside The Gale South Beach And Regent Hotel (JIPSY PHOTOS)
BY JIPSY, NEFARIOUSGIRL.COM
At an average of more than $300 a night, room rates at the new Gale South Beach and Regent Hotel set the tone of what to expect at this $35 million investment from Menin Hotels.
Located on the southwest corner of 17th Street and Collins Avenue, this boutique hotel captured my attention from the moment I stepped foot on the property and my eye caught the entry light fixtures — turns out, they’re replicas of the originals.
Speak up: Moscow introduces ‘Hyde Parks’ for public gatherings
AFP Photo / Kirill KudryavtsevLegislation establishing two special zones for popular political events in Moscow came into effect on January 7. Those hoping to organize demonstrations will no longer have to request authorization, only inform the park’s management.
The two areas Moscow authorities designated for rallies and political debates are situated in two city parks: Gorky Park in the city center, and Sokolniki in the southeast. Each can host up to 2,000 people.Starting January 7, anyone seeking to arrange a rally must inform the park’s management no earlier than 15 and no later than three days before the event.Russian media and activists have dubbed the areas Moscow’s ‘Hyde Parks,’ referring to the London park where anyone can freely express himself in the ‘Speakers’ Corner.’The amendments to the legislation regulating public gatherings were prompted by mass rallies in Moscow and in other cities throughout Russia last year. Thousands of people demonstrated to demand fair elections following accusations that Russia’s December 2011 parliamentary elections were fraudulent. The specified areas will not be able to host massive rallies, which will still require a special permit from Moscow authorities, but aim to satisfy public demands for space for small gatherings.Last year, the Moscow mayoral office received over 200 applications for different kinds of rallies with less than 1,000 participants. Many members of the Russian opposition have expressed skepticism about the plan, complaining that the areas are too far from the city center and too small to host large rallies. The amended legislation also stipulated that single-person pickets pursuing one common goal must now be authorized by authorities. Previously, a single-person picket could be held without a permit as long as there were no other protesters within 50 meters. … Read More
