The 66th Cannes film festival begins on Wednesday. The world’s most important cinema showcase is putting the final touches in place
that make this Mediterranean resort so irresistible at this time of year. This year’s poster features Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward who were first honoured by Cannes in 1958, the year they married.

More than 4000 films will be seen, pitched, haggled over, sold or perhaps just imagined as belief is suspended and dreams dreamt, by filmmakers and fans alike. Star spotting is part of the fun.

“To see the stars you have to come as early as possible and now we come here from the Sunday, instead of going to church. And we can’t wait for Wednesday. It’s almost become a real job,” said one fan.

“We’re waiting for the French actors of course. We’re very impatient to see Alain Delon and Leonardo Di Caprio, and the great film-maker Spielberg, who I love,” said another.

Cannes normally opens with a world premiere, but not this year. The curtain raiser is “The Great Gatsby” which has already opened in America, to lukewarm reviews.

Organisers say the Newman/Woodward poster is supposed to evoke a “luminous and tender image of the modern couple”, presumably like Hollywood and Cannes, and American directors do have their biggest entry in the Palme d’Or competition in six years; five movies battle it out with five French efforts, two from Japan, and one each from Chad, China, Denmark, Mexico, Iran, Tunisia, Italy, and the Netherlands.

Beyond the movies themselves Cannes is also about the cinema business, and buying, selling, making deals and quaffing champagne will keep industry insiders busy around the clock for 10 days.

Latvian party calls for demolition of Soviet Liberator Memorials

According to architect Aleksandr Kirshtejns, who is the National Alliance’s candidate for the Riga mayoralty, the memorial should have been brought down back in 1991 with the rest of the Soviet-era monuments.“But now the time is lost and we must move towards it step-by-step,” Kirshtejns is cited as saying by Mixnews.lv. The National Alliance, which came fourth in 2011 parliament elections and holds posts of the minister of justice and minister of culture in the current government, plans to turn Victory Park, where the monument is situated, into an amusement park.    The party meeting decided that the area must have plenty of space for active recreation and different sporting events. It’s also proposed to erect metal plates, with text in several languages describing “the true meaning of Soviet liberation for the Latvian people.” The official stance of the current Latvian government is that the country was occupied by the USSR from 1940–1991. Many local politicians believe that May 9, 1945, did not bring Latvia liberation from the Nazi invaders, but rather became just the continuation of the Soviet seizure. But ethnic Russians, who make up around 26 per cent of the Latvian population, think differently, with around 200,000 gathering annually at the Liberators’ Memorial for the Victory Day celebration. It’s not the first time the issue of the monument’s removal has been raised in the country, Latvia’s Defense Minister Artis Pabriks previously calling it “outmoded”. In 1997, local neo-Nazis laid a bomb in the memorial’s foundation, but the blast was prevented, with organizer Igors Shishkins sentenced to two years and eight months in prison.   The Memorial to Soviet Liberators consists of a 79-meter-tall stele, the sculpture of Mother Motherland and three statues of soldiers. Senate takes steps to reduce sexual violence in the military

According to a survey of active-duty service members released last week, one in five women reported experiencing unwanted sexual contact since they enlisted in the military. Other statistics reveal that there were 3,192 reported cases of military sexual trauma in 2011, but as many as 19,000 incidents likely went unreported. The sobering prevalence of sexual assault in the armed services and the failures of military leadership to hold responsible parties accountable (only 10 percent of sexual assaults reported in 2011 went to trial) have created a military culture that is increasingly dangerous for female service members.Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) has offered two Senate proposals to begin the process of reform in American military culture. The first measure, introduced last week, will provide increased access to reproductive health care to female service members. The second, set to be introduced next month, intends to reform the way the military handles sexual assault cases.Continue Reading… Read More

Desmond Tutu: It’s time to talk to our children about rape

In an editorial for the Guardian on Friday, social justice icon and Cape Town Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu called on parents to talk to their children about rape, the same way they would discuss bullying, guns and drugs.Horrific sexual assaults in the United States, India, South Africa and elsewhere have brought global violence against women into stark relief, and Tutu, joined by education nonprofit head Jacob Lief and author, activist and rape survivor Sohaila Abdulali, views stopping it as more than just the work of governments and law enforcement. Ending rape culture, they say, is also “family work,” a conversation that must be had around the dinner table if its message is ever going to take hold:Continue Reading… Read More

‘Boxing Bout’: Chechen leader pummels Sports Minister

On a recent visit to the Sports Ministry, the President of the southern Russian republic was unhappy with what he saw, and decided to take on minister Salambek Ismailov in the ring.Gloved up the pair sparred, working up a sweat, and ironing out their differences.“As promised, I’ve conducted an educational talk with the Sports and Culture Minister – in the ring. In the course of our dialogue (or, more accurately, sparring), I pointed out with a right and a left hook, gently and unassumingly, I explained to him in simple terms that one should use his head,” Kadyrov wrote in the comment to pictures he posted on Instagram.Kadyrov says the building was shabby and something needed to be done. “The minister has already started to correct his mistakes today, so I allowed him to wear a helmet. He still has to work tomorrow,” he wrote. Watching anxiously ringside were the Labour Minister Mohmad Ahmadov, and Minister for Social Development Maksim Topilin, who are next in line said President Kadyrov jokingly, “We’ll see after tomorrow’s meeting whether Ahmadov will be punished in the ring as well.” Read More
