US President Barack Obama has said he pictures no eventuality in which American troops would be sent to Syria.

IT follows Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel’s, announcement a day earlier that the White House is considering many options for resolving the conflict, including perhaps offering arms to rebel fighters.

The president reaffirmed that use of chemical weapons by forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad would be a “game changer” but said any response would not be hurried.

“I do not foresee a scenario in which boots on the ground in Syria, American boots on the ground in Syria, would not only be good for America, but also would be good for Syria. And by the way when I consult with leaders in the region, they agree with that assessment,” President Obama said.

Meanwhile American media have cited unnamed US officials saying they believe that Israel is mostly likely to be behind an air strike on Syria on Friday, which is thought to have targeted a chemical weapons delivery system.

The Israeli authorities have refused to comment on this but said they are determined to prevent chemical weapons falling into the hands of terrorists especially Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The US report said Israel did not violate Syrian airspace, but it did have warplanes flying over Lebanon at the time.

Israel had earlier confessed to bombing a convoy in January which it said was transporting weapons to Hezbollah.
