The release of seven security men by their kidnappers in Sinai has prompted Egypt’s president to call on all militants to hand in their weapons.

Mohamed Mursi also vowed to pursue a crackdown on lawlessness in Sinai.

The men, were released in the village of Salah Ha-Deen, after mediation efforts by Bedouin leaders. It has also been reported the kidnappers began to fear a confrontation with the Egyptian military.

Nassar Abed Al Gafour who is a village elder told Euronews that the residents wanted better security:

“We are on the front line with both Israel and Hamas, and we live here. There are many factions who have an interest in this area. They want to defend their own interests and they will perform summary justice. Which is unworthy.”

Under the terms of a 1979 agreement with Israel the Egyptian military presence is restricted in the peninsula. But Cairo has now ordered more forces into the area with Israeli agreement.

Seven Egyptian security officers kidnapped in Sinai last week have been released.

The men arrived at a military base in Cairo on Wednesday morning where they were received by President Mohamed Mursi and government ministers.

Security forces said the men were freed following talks mediated by Bedouin tribal leaders.

The kidnappers had demanded the release of members of an Islamist group convicted of carrying out a series of attacks in North Sinai in 2011 that killed seven people.

It is not known if any concessions were made to ensure the release of the hostages.

The men had been seized while travelling in minibuses in northern Sinai, between the city of el-Arish and Rafah.

The abduction highlights the lawlessness in the desert peninsula which has become increasingly unstable since the overthrow of President Hosni Mubarak.

The Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt which had been closed following the kidnapping has now been re-opened.

There is fresh tension on the ceasefire line in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. Syria says its troops have destroyed an Israeli vehicle which crossed into its territory.

Tel Aviv has denied the report, saying a vehicle was hit by gunfire on its side of the ceasefire line. Israel also says that it returned fire after the incident.

“First of all our policy on Syria is clear. We are not intervening there, in the civil
war,” said Moshe Yaalon, Israeli Defence Minister.

“But, as for the situation in the Golan
Heights, we are not allowing and we will not permit, a spillover of fire into our territory.

“Overnight, a Syrian army target was
destroyed after gunfire spilled into our
territory in the Golan Heights.”

The incident is the latest on an increasingly fraught frontier. Syria and Israel have traded fire on a number of occasions in recent weeks.

Egypt sent extra troops to Sinai – days after seven members of its security forces were kidnapped there.

26 armoured vehicles and several military helicopters were deployed to the city of el-Arish.

The Sinai peninsula has become increasingly unstable since the overthrow of President Hosni Mubarak two years ago.

One el-Arish resident told euronews
that Egypt’s competing power blocks could be at the root of the unrest:

“The target now is the Egyptian army because it is the most powerful Arab army, and they want to break it. The Muslim Brotherhood came via the Americans to divide the Arab world,” the resident said.

Egypt’s President Mohammed Mursi, a prominent member of the Muslim Brotherhood, said the government will explore all options to get the kidnapped soldiers released – except negotiating with the abductors.

Euronews correspondent Mohammed Shaikhibrahim reported from el-Arish:

“Targeting the Egyptian army raises many questions about who benefits from trying to force the military to engage in Egypt’s complex political situation at this time – especially in the border area, which is particularly sensitive in terms of security,” Shaikhibrahim said.

Police in Israel are investigating a shootout at a bank in the southern city of Be’er Sheva in which a man killed four people before turning his gun on himself.

The assailant is said to have been local, Jewish and in his 40s.

But what was at first thought to have been a bungled attempted robbery, police now think may have been a dispute over the refusal of a loan.

The incident drew comment from the Israeli prime minister:

“This is very serious. I do not remember such an event, certainly not in the last few years and it is not common place in Israel. An attack like this must not be allowed to happen again,” said Prime MInister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Police are looking into whether the gunman had financial difficulties or if he had any other personal dispute with one of the bank workers.

All four victims, they said, were killed by the attacker and did not die in the shootout with security officials.
