Thirty-two killed by blasts outside Sunni mosque in Iraq

Another blast was reported by Al Jazeera southeast of the capital where a suicide bomber hit a funeral procession, the death toll and casualties are not yet known. The news comes after eleven people were killed in series of bomb attacks in Baghdad and Kirkuk – Iraq’s two major cities – on Thursday. In the Kirkuk attack, five people were killed after a suicide bomber detonated his explosive vest at the entrance to a Shiite mosque. While in the suburb of Sadr city in Baghdad three people and killed and 17 injured. A further blast in Baghdad a car bomb blew up outside a market in the Chukook neighborhood, which killed one bystander. Militant attacks on Sunni and Shiite mosques as well as against security forces and tribal leaders have mushroomed since security forces aided a Sunni protest camp in Kirkuk a month ago, fuelling fear that Iraq may slide back into all out-sectarian war.Overall violence in Iraq has dropped since its peak in 2005-2007, but tensions between Sunnis and Shiites have remained high since the US led invasion of the country in 2003.Iraq has grown more volatile since the start of the civil war two years ago in neighboring Syria, which has also pitted Sunnis against Shiites. Family struggles to find placeto bury Tamerlan Tsarnaev

Ruslan Tsarni, the uncle of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects, traveled north from his home in Maryland in order to lay the body of his deceased nephew to rest. Tsarni and three of his friends washed and shrouded Tsarnaev’s body in line with Muslim tradition, and planned to bury it in Massachusetts. But “no one wants to associate their names with such evil events”, Tsarni told AP, while describing his struggle in finding a burial plot for his nephew.“Rest in hell! Get that trash out of the city!” passer-byes yelled Monday morning, as they walked past the funeral home where Tsarnaev’s body is held.Peter Stefan, the owner of the Graham Putnam & Mahoney Funeral Parlors, is holding onto the body and is trying to help the family, but says he has been unable to find any cemeteries that would sell a plot to them. He said he will now ask cemeteries with areas designated for Muslims, as well as the city of Cambridge. But at this point, Tsarni “just wants a burial. It doesn’t have to be a Muslim grave. That’s how far along we are,” he told the Boston Herald.Stefan’s involvement has triggered protests outside of his Worcester funeral home. People have called him “un-American” for handling the burial, which the funeral director says he has a professional obligation to do.“We take an oath to do this. Can I pick and choose? No. Can I separate the sins from the sinners? No,” he told reporters. “We are burying a dead body. That’s what we do.”Protesters held American flags and signs and chanted “USA!” outside of the funeral home this past weekend. “Bury this terrorist on US soil and we will unbury him,” read a sign held by one of the protesters that gathered in Worcestor on Sunday.“Throw him off a boat like Osama bin Laden!” a man yelled while protesting on Saturday.“Do not bury him on US soil,” read another sign.Although Stefan said he would talk to Cambridge city officials about burying Tsarnaev in a city-owned cemetery, he is unlikely to strike a deal. Cambridge City Manager Robert Healy on Sunday warned Tsarnaev’s family not to request a burial permit in the city, since Cambridge would be “adversely impacted by the turmoil, protests and widespread media presence at such an Interment.””The difficult and stressful efforts of the citizens of the City of Cambridge to return to a peaceful life would be adversely impacted by the turmoil, protests, and wide spread media presence at such an interment,” Healy said. He explained that the families of those who are buried in the cemetery deserve peace and quiet. If Tsarnaev were to be buried in Cambridge, it would attract media attention and protests that would rob the cemetery of its tranquility. Appearing on “Good Morning America” on Saturday, Stefan said he looked for plots as far as New Jersey and Connecticut, but had no luck out-of-state.Tsarni told reporters that he understands why cemeteries refuse to accept his nephew’s body, but that he is “dealing with logistics” in trying to put Tsarnaev’s body to rest.“A dead person must be buried,” he said.Tsarni has publicly denounced the actions of his nephews and said they brought shame to the family and the Chechen people. He stepped up to bury the young man’s body since no one else would do it. On Sunday, he emerged wearily from the funeral home after washing and wrapping Tsarnaev’s body, as called for by Muslim tradition. But with no luck finding a plot for Tsarnaev in the US, the body might be sent to Russia. Zubeidat Tsarnaeva, the mother of the bombing suspects, on Sunday called Stefan “in tears”, asking for the body to be sent “home” to Chechnya, the Boston Herald reports.“I have refrigeration. I can hold him for a long time,” Stefan said. “It’d be a great idea if we could send him to Russia, but I would have to have [permission] from the State Department. This is a national security situation. We can’t just send a body over like we’re dumping it.”Stefan said he would even pay for the body’s transportation himself, since “it’s only a couple thousand dollars” and that it needs to be buried.”My question is, is someone going to do something once I get him there?” he said. “No [going] back and forth and [holding] him there because he’s a terrorist or whatever. That day, have a service, a burial and end it. This is becoming an international political football.” Read More

I assume they will make a decision soon. I hope they do. I think everybody is feeling upset about what happened. But we showed the world in the immediate aftermath of the attacks what a civilization looks like, and I’m proud of what we showed and I think we continue to do that by stepping back and let the family make their decisions,” he added. Westboro Baptist Church says they’ll picket Boston Marathon victims’ funerals

The church — a Topeka, Kansas-based religious organization that has been labeled by many as a “hate group” — says God allowed the city of Boston to be attacked because Massachusetts was the first state in the US to legalize same-sex marriage.A tweet sent from one of the church’s accounts on Monday explained their reasoning and announced that the group plans to picket funeral services scheduled in the coming days. So far the bombing has claimed three lives and President Obama called the incident an “act of terror” during a Tuesday morning press briefing.“The federal government is classifying the bombs as a terrorist attack, but say it’s unclear if it’s of a domestic or foreign nature,” the church writes. “Here’s a hint — GOD SENT THE BOMBS! How many more terrifying ways will you have the LORD injure and kill your fellow countrymen because you insist on nation-dooming filthy fag marriage?!”“Christ Jesus said that same-sex marriage would prevail just before the time that He returns in power and glory, taking vengeance on the disobedient (Luke 17; 2 Thes. 1). Massachusetts invited this special wrath from God Almighty when it was the FIRST STATE to pass same-sex marriage on May 17, 2004. As a direct and immediate result of that first step down the slippery slope to nationwide fag marriage, God sent the devastating bombs to the Boston Marathon,” says the church.Previously the group has picketed a number of high-profile funerals while holding signs containing anti-gay messages. The group picketed the funeral of Matthew Sheppard — a homosexual man killed as a result of a hate crime in 1998 — and in recent months attempted to protest services for victims of the Sandy Hook school shooting and film critic Roger Ebert. On Tuesday, the group continued to credit the attacks as an act of God, not terrorism, and published photos of a new sign likely to appear at any demonstration in Boston — it reads “God Sent the Bombs.”The group also recorded a song in response to the event and began circulating it early Tuesday. The first verse of “Massachusetts” goes:“Your fall all began in Massachusetts Where the wedding fags first found a home Now God’s light has gone out in Massachusetts And the whole nation reaps just what you have sown.”A petition created on the White House’s We the People website back in December asking for the Westboro Baptist Church to be formally recognized as a hate group has so far garnered 354,502 signatures. Two other petitions combined have collected the names of roughly 150,000 people who are asking for the church’s tax-exempt status to be revoked.Upon news of their plan in Boston, a petition added to the site this week asking the church to be banned from picketing funeral services for the bombing victims has already received over 6,000 signatures.“It’s sickening to know that the WBC will be picketing the funerals of two innocent people, one of which is only an 8 year old child. We can’t let them get into Boston and do this,” writes the author of the latest plea. “This is a petition to stop the WBC from getting into Boston, or worse, picketing the funerals of two innocent people. There is no excuse for this kind of behavior.”Less than 24 hours after two bombs went off near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, police say three people have been killed and more than 100 injured. As French stars invaded London for the festival Rendez-vous with French Cinema, euronews spoke to the darling of both British and French cinemas, Kristin Scott Thomas.

In her no-nonsense style, she reminded our correspondent Ali May of the differences between the two cinemas, quoting fellow-actor Sophie Marceau that French films are like conversations in a kitchen.

“The French film world is very much a world rather than an industry,” she said, comparing it with British cinema which is more box office focused. “People consider themselves to be artists.”

The star of the English Patient and Four Weddings and a Funeral has her new film In the House in cinemas now.

Westboro Baptist Church to protest at Roger Ebert’s funeral

The Westboro Baptist Church, which has been petitioned to be classified as a hate group, plans to picket the funeral of legendary film critic Roger Ebert on Monday morning. Westboro took issue with the Pultizer-Prize winning film critic, who died on Thursday, after he tweeted out a link to an excerpt from Jeff Chu’s book “Does Jesus Really Love Me?” on Salon, in which Chu, a gay man, goes undercover to spend four days in Kansas studying the homophobic group. Ebert tweeted two links, saying in one of them, “Just another day at Westboro Baptist.”Westboro’s protest will begin at 9:15 AM. From the press release:Continue Reading… Read More
