Russia says the Syrian government has agreed in principle to attend a peace conference in Geneva next month.

The talks are being set up by Russia and the US with the aim of bringing Syria’s government and opposition together.

Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday.

Moscow is continuing to stress any insistence from the opposition that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad go is not helpful.

Referring to this stipulation, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said: “The meetings in Madrid and Istanbul were not promising. They (the opposition) put forward a pre-condition of resignation of the President and shaping a “government” under the UN supervision.”

The opposition are questioning the effect of any government presence in Geneva.

“We would like to know whether this delegation is empowered to make decisions including the transfer of power to this interim government, the transitional government, that is fully powered to make decisions. That is not clear,” said Louay Safi, a member of the Syrian National Coalition.

For the moment, the majority of the fighting is taking place in the strategic town of Qusayr near the border with Lebanon.

The UN has warned there could be three million Syrian refugees by 2014.

Members of Syria’s opposition coalition are in Istanbul to decide whether they will take part in talks, which aim to bring an end to the country’s civil war.

Washington and Moscow want to hold a conference in Geneva by the end of the month.

The Syrian conflict is said to have claimed at least 80,000 lives.

“We have a lot of unknowns about the Geneva conference,” said Louay Safi, a member of the Syrian National Coalition.

“We are for any conference that helps transition the situation into an elective government away from the dictatorship, but that will be our condition. We are not going to accept any negotiations that do not indicate that Assad is going to be out,” he continued.

Meanwhile some of the fiercest fighting in months has been seen in the town of Qusair, on the Syria-Lebanon border.

The violence has drawn in fighters from Lebanon’s Hezbollah movement. That are signs, according to Britain, that Iran and its allies in the militant group are giving increasing support to Syrian President Bashar al Assad.

Scientists find traces of dark matter from cosmos

GENEVA (AP) — A $2 billion cosmic ray detector on the International Space Station has found the first significant hint of dark matter, the mysterious substance that is believed to hold the cosmos together but has never been directly observed, scientists say.The first results from the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer, which was sent into space two years ago, show evidence of a new physics phenomena that could be the strange and unknown matter, an international team at the European particle physics laboratory near Geneva announced Wednesday.Nobel-winning physicist Samuel Ting, who leads the team, said he expects a more conclusive answer within months. The data is being collected and analyzed at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, or CERN, along the Swiss-French border. The findings Wednesday are based on seeing an excess of positrons — positively charged subatomic particles. Since the 7-ton AMS magnetic detector began studying cosmic ray particles in space, it found about 400,000 positrons whose surging energies indicate they might have been created when particles of dark matter collided and destroyed each other.Continue Reading… Read More
