Alfred Hitchcock, real-life “Psycho”

Despite being dead for almost 33 years, Alfred Hitchcock still managed to have a fairly interesting year in 2012. In addition to Vertigo’s toppling of Citizen Kane as the greatest film of all time in Sight & Sound’s decennial critics poll, the Master of Suspense also turned up on-screen as the subject of not one, but two films about his later life. I’ve personally been a fan since seeing To Catch a Thief on television at age 9, but I put off watching both of these movies until recently, mainly because I feared their unsavory portrayals of the acclaimed director might dampen my appreciation for his work. Kerry: Budget impasse a challenge for US diplomacy

WASHINGTON (AP) — Secretary of State John Kerry says the greatest challenge to U.S. foreign policy is not emerging China or Middle East instability. It’s Congress.

In prepared remarks for a speech at the University of Virginia, Kerry cites the adage that “we can’t be strong in the world unless we are strong at home.” He calls the budget impasse a threat.

The State Department has said automatic spending cuts would jeopardize $2.6 billion in aid, security assistance and other international programs.

Kerry says legislators need to avoid “senseless cuts.”

Otherwise, he says his credibility as a diplomat might be damaged.

Kerry says, “Think about it: It is hard to tell the leadership of any number of countries that they must resolve their economic issues if we don’t resolve our own.”

Dick Van Dyke Accepts Life Achievement Award At ‘Screen Actors Guild Awards’ With Humility, Joy (VIDEO)

After 70 years in the business, as he cited during his speech, Dick Van Dyke was jubilant upon accepting the Life Achievement Award at “The 19th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards.” The 87-year old screen legend nimbly darted onto the stage with an infectious smile beaming across the room.

“Aren’t we lucky to have found a line of work that doesn’t require growing up? I love that,” he marveled.

While the award was honoring Van Dyke’s career and achievements as an actor, he had perhaps even more praise and awe for the assembled talent in front of him. “I’m looking at the greatest generation of actors in the history of acting. You’ve all lifted the art, I don’t know, to another place now,” he said.
