On the streets of Woolwich in south-east London, a heavy police presence remains after the brutal murder of a British soldier in broad daylight on Wednesday.

Locals fear the repercussions of the events for their communities as terrorism and Islamist extremism are back in the UK spotlight.

Reactions range from fear to anger.

“As it is for the black community we are really, really angry about it. We got harboured by the English people so they don’t deserve this, they don’t deserve it. So what those boys did is way, way beyond anything one could explain,” said one resident of Nigerian descent.

Another resident said the situation was ‘quite tense’. “A few of my colleagues were scared to come to work today because it was right on the doorstep,” she explained.

Police hoped to allay any tensions from arising following clashes with members of the right wing English Defence League (EDL) in the capital on Wednesday. Security at Woolwich Barracks has also been stepped up.

US President Barack Obama has promised to limit the use of controversial drone strikes.

He faces criticism for the policy which poses legal and ethical problems with unintended civilian casualties.

In a speech at the National Defence University, he outlined the rationale behind the use of lethal unmanned drone aircraft as part of a ‘just war’ against militants.

“America does not take strikes when we have the ability to capture individual terrorists – our preference is always to detain, interrogate, and prosecute them,” he explained. Continuing he said that, “America does not take strikes to punish individuals – we act against terrorists who pose a continuing and imminent threat to the American people, and when there are no other governments capable of effectively addressing the threat.”

Obama is also facing increased pressure to close Guantanamo where many prisoners in the ‘war on terror’ have been detained for over a decade without trial. As he attempted to address the issue, a heckler interrupted him over the ongoing hunger strike at the military facility.

In response to criticism over Guantanamo, he announced the end of a moratorium on transferring detainees to Yemen, and asked the Defence department to locate a site so that the remaining prisoners could be tried on US soil. He also said he would work to break the deadlock in Congress over closing the detention centre once and for all.

New 5 euro banknote in circulation 30/04/2013 16:03 CET

Holiday-makers planning to travel to Greece this summer may be well advised not to take the new five-euro bank notes with them.

The new five-euro notes that began circulating earlier this month are not recognised by ATMs and automated ticket vending machines on lines 2 and 3 of the Athens Metro. The problem appears to be with new security measures.

According to technical support experts, a software upgrade is required in order for the ATM and ticket vending machines to process the new bank notes.

The Metro management will have completed the software upgrade by early June, so until then the notes will only be accepted at staffed ticket vending booths.

80-year-old conquers Mount Everest

||

Eighty-year-old Japanese mountaineer Yuichiro Miura scaled Mount Everest on Thursday morning, becoming the oldest person to achieve the feat.

Gyanedra Shrestha, an official from Nepal’s mountaineering department stated that Miura reached the peak at 08:45 am Nepali time. Shrestha added that all 10 members of Miura’s team – including his son, Gota – conquered the peak without any serious problems and are now on their way back down.

Miura had already scaled Mount Everest five years ago aged 75. However, he was pipped to the post by Nepalese Min Bahadur Sherchan who reached the peak a day earlier at the age of 76 to become the oldest person to climb the mountain.

The rivalry between the two is not over yet. Sherchan, now aged 81, is currently at the Everest Base Camp preparing for another daring attempt at the world’s highest peak, hoping to win back his record.

Miura’s climbing history

Yuichiro Miura first scaled Everest in 2003 at the age of 70. He repeated the feat five years later.

It seemed as if his dream to be the oldest person to reach the peak had been shattered when he fractured his pelvis during a skiing accident in 2009. But against all odds and contrary to doctors’ expectations, he started training just six months after the incident.

Considering the fact that he suffers from metabolic syndrome, an irregular heartbeat and irregular shaking of the atrium, Miura’s achievement seems rather superhuman.
Miura’s first acquaintance with Mount Everest dates back to 1970, when he became the first person to ski down the mountain from an elevation of 8,000 metres.
