Tamerlan Tsarnaev burial held up as ‘people are petrified’

Tsarnaev’s death certificate lists the cause of death as “gunshot wounds of torso and extremities” as well as “blunt trauma to the head and torso,” according to the Boston Herald. The file has not been submitted to city of Boston but Peter Stefan, the owner of Graham, Putnam, and Mahoney Funeral Parlor in Worcester, showed the document to media. Tsarnaev, 26, was killed after a gunfight with police in the early morning hours of April 19, nearly four days after he and younger brother Dzhokar are thought to have detonated explosives near the marathon’s finish line. The attack killed three people and injured 264 others.  It is widely believed that Dzhokar drove over his injured brother in a rush to escape from law enforcement. Tamerlan was pronounced dead at 1:35am on April 19 at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.Stefan told reporters that protesters were demonstrating outside the building chanting “USA” and holding signs implying the funeral director, who friends described as a “man of integrity,” was betraying his country by preparing Tsarneav for burial. “If somebody dies, I can’t pick and choose,” he said. “I’ve had people come to me and say, ‘What are you doing?’ Somebody murdered their mother. Somebody murdered their child. I don’t bury murderers. I don’t bury terrorists. I bury bodies.” The Worcester funeral director added that a second autopsy is likely at the request of Dzhokar’s attorney, as the defense team prepares for trial. Despite suffering a gunshot wound to the neck the younger Tsarneav is now able to speak and has been interacting with staff at Federal Medical Center Devens, a prison spokesman said earlier this week. “A second autopsy doesn’t take long,” Stefan said. “It’s fairly common. You see it a lot with car crashes…My main thing is looking for a cemetery. I’ve been making calls. I’ve been turned down by every one of them. All these people are petrified.” Tamerlan lived roughly 40 miles away from the funeral home where his body was prepared for burial this week, in a house on Norfolk Street in Cambridge, with his wife and child. Elder Tsarnaev’s cause of death: ‘Gunshot wounds and head-torso trauma’

Mozilla demands firm halt spyware masquerading as Firefox

Gamma International, a British security firm with ostensibly few scruples, has been accused of developing surveillance software which intentionally masquerades as Firefox. The program's unauthorized similarities to Mozilla's well-known browser prompted the organization to issue a cease-and-desist notice in an effort to protect the integrity of its brand. Read More

Jon Stewart is no Bassem Youssef

Two weeks ago Egypt’s public prosecutor ordered the arrest of comedian Bassem Youssef, host of the TV show Al-Bernameg, for “insulting Islam” and Egypt’s President Mohammad Morsi. Youssef’s name is rarely mentioned without reference to his admitted role model, the American comedian Jon Stewart, who recently defended Youssef on The Daily Show.Since Youssef’s arrest, nearly every story about the incident labels the heart-surgeon-turned-TV-star as “Egypt’s Jon Stewart.” But Youssef — who continues to risk his freedom and career to ridicule Egypt’s political elite — has little in common with Stewart, a man who’s built a comedy empire on an unwarranted reputation for prophetic humor and moral integrity. And even while Youssef himself cites Stewart as an influence, the Egyptian humorist far outshines his American counterpart in his willingness to challenge political and social taboos.Continue Reading… Read More

Russia’s labor market ‘practically illegitimate’, 38mn work in shadow economy

Eighty-six million people are employed in various economic sectors, of which only 48 million are said to be working in legitimate businesses.”We don’t understand where and how the rest are employed,” Golodets told a conference at Moscow’s Higher School of Economics.”Our labor market is practically illegitimate, with only a tiny sector functioning under transparent rules,” she added.“With the shadow sector this large, we have lack of funding for all our social costs,” Golodets pointed out, adding that Russia is at least 20 years behind other countries on the international labor market in terms of the level of employment. It’s hoped that the problem could be solved with a new law defining professional standards in Russia. According to the World Bank, Russia’s shadow economy is 3.5 times bigger than in other G8 countries, with ineffectiveness of public administration and tax evasion holding back the country’s economic and political advancements.   Last December GFI reported that Russia lost $151 billion in black money, leaving the country between 2001 and 2010, making it the fifth largest victim of illicit capital outflow. A US financial watchdog, Global Financial Integrity (GFI), reported in February that from 1994 to 2011Russia lost billions of dollars in form of bribes, tax evasion and money from the trade in drugs, weapons and people. The illicit inflow of money to Russia in the same period amounted to about $553 billion. Experts noted however, that the volume of Russia’s black economy decreased from an average 46 per cent of GDP prior to 2011 to 35 per cent in 2011. This led to more than $211 billion of illicit money fleeing the country.“Russia has a severe problem with illegal flows of money. Hundreds of billions of dollars have been lost that could have been used to invest in Russian healthcare, education, and infrastructure. At the same time, more than a half trillion dollars has illegally flowed into the Russian underground economy, fueling crime and corruption,” GFI Director Raymond Baker revealed. Read More

Jeb Bush: No path to citizenship in immigration reform

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said Monday that he does not support a pathway to citizenship as a part of immigration reform plans under consideration in Congress. Bush, in a new book co-authored libertarian lawyer Clint Bolnick, argues for giving a path to legal permanent residency to many of the 11 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S.”It is absolutely vital to the integrity of our immigration system that actions have consequences — in this case, that those who violated the law can remain but cannot obtain the cherished fruits of citizenship,” Bush and lawyer Clint Bolick argue in a new book, “Immigration Wars: Forging an American Solution.” The former governor repeated this line on the “Today” show Monday, noting “Our proposal is a proposal that looks forward. And if we want to create an immigration policy that’s going to work, we can’t continue to make illegal immigration an easier path than legal immigration.”Continue Reading… Read More
