The murder of a soldier in Woolwich has already sparked a sequence of worrying and violent reactions in the United Kingdom.

Hours after the brutal killing, members of the English Defense League (EDL) told followers to “take to the streets” and declared “we are at war” via their website. In less than 24 hours the organisation saw the number of its Facebook followers triple.

The EDL calls itself an inclusive group that protests against Islamic “extremism” but in an online statement it broadened this criteria, saying “we must criticise the Muslim community’s failure to deal with the extremists” and added “we must criticise the self-segregation of certain sections of the Muslim community”. Just hours after the Woolwich attack around 100 members of the EDL clashed with riot police in the streets.

Elsewhere in the UK, two other people were arrested in connection with separate attacks on mosques. In Kent, police were called to a report of criminal damage, while in Essex a man is reported to have entered a mosque wielding a knife.

Some people are fearing a snowballing chain of revenge attacks, a notion that Matthew Goodwin from The Guardian calls “cumulative extremism”. He describes, “one form of extremism, for example rightwing extremism, mobilises specifically in response to another form , for example violent Islamism”. Goodwin suggests that as these tit-for-tat attacks grow, the original grievance is often forgotten and compared the situation to the unrest in Northen Ireland during the The Troubles of the 60s, 70s and 80s.

The Islamic Society of Britain was quick to condemn the attacks, saying, “Murdering a British soldier is an attack on our nation… Justifying this killing in the name of faith or religion is false and rejected”.

Another representative body, The Muslim Council of Britain, also commented: “This is a truly barbaric act that has no basis in Islam…We call on our communities, Muslim and non-Muslim, to come together in solidarity to ensure the forces of hatred do not prevail”

While some find these public statements constructive others have argued that apologising only propagates the belief in collective guilt. George Eaton from the New Statesman defended the Muslim community, “Muslim’s shouldn’t have to distance themselves… They bear no more responsibility for jihadism than Christians do for the Ku Klux Klan.”

The announcements from the Muslim representative bodies did little to pacify the reaction from the British National Party (BNP) which dramatically announced “the beginning of the civil war”. The far-right nationalist group blamed “limp-wristed politicians” and called for a programme of deportation, claiming “the multicultural ethnic cleansing of our people from the homeland must stop”. The group has organised demonstrations for May 25 and June 1.

The Lone Wolf Terrorist

The ‘Lone Wolf’ terrorist is a growing fear for police and security services who have previously thwarted several planned attacks by networks of terrorists across the world.

Increasingly, individuals are viewing online material from extremist preachers and while some may be inspired by al-Qaeda, they have often had no real contact with fanatical groups.

In 2010 Roshonara Choudhry was convicted of the attempted murder of British MP Stephen Timms after having radicalised herself over the internet; in 2012 Mohammed Merah targeted soldiers and Jewish civilians in Toulouse, France and more recently, in the US last month, the Boston bombings were carried out by brothers with no apparent link to terrorist organisations.

The fear is that these extremists who are acting suddenly, with little planning and with no network are almost impossible to predict and to stop. Some journalists have coined the term “Nike terrorists” after the sport company’s slogan “Just do it”.

John O’Connor, a former Flying Squad commander at Scotland Yard told The Telegraph : “This has all the hallmarks of a very low key terrorist incident which raises a number of problems for the authorities…This type of attack is very difficult to protect against”.

The UK government’s emergency response committee will meet again this morning, in the wake of a machete killing in broad daylight on a London street.

Prime Minister David Cameron will chair the emergency COBRA session himself.

A 20-year-old man – unofficially described as a soldier – was hacked to death in the suburb of Woolwich, near a large military barracks and court complex.

“It was a sickening, barbaric, completely unforgivable crime. I know that Londoners have been through terrorism before and this city has a huge resilience. What we also have is the best, most professional security services and the best police in the world to protect us and they are now going to get to the bottom of exactly what’s happened.” said Boris Johnson, Mayor of London.

Speculation is rife in the media and on the streets that this is a jihadist attack. There have been sporadic clashes overnight between far-right activists and police.

“Enough’s enough. Our message is – enough’s enough. We have weak leaders, weak police. Our police, our leaders tiptoe around this issue. This issue is political Islam. It’s political Islam that’s spreading across this country.” said English Defence League spokesman Tommy Robinson.

A murder inquiry has been launched by police counter-terrorism experts. Two men have been arrested.

The UK government’s emergency response committee has met in the wake of a machete killing in broad daylight on a London street.

Prime Minister David Cameron chaired the emergency COBRA session himself.

A 20-year-old man – unofficially described as a soldier – was first knocked over by a car and then hacked to death in the suburb of Woolwich, near a large military barracks and court complex.

A video taken by a bystander just minutes after the killing has emerged, showing the blood-soaked attacker brandishing a knife and a cleaver and speaking directly to the camera.

In the clip, obtained by UK newspaper The Sun, the man says: “We swear by almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you. The only reason we have done this is because Muslims are dying every day…This British soldier is an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.” He went on to say, “You people will never be safe. Remove your government. They don’t care about you.”

Police shot two suspects at the scene, both are currently under arrest in hospital.

British media have named one of the attackers as 28-year-old Michael Adebolajo and reported that police have raided the home of his Nigerian family. Unconfirmed reports from the British media suggest the men came from Christian immigrant families before converting to Islam.

Boris Johnson, Mayor of London said, “It was a sickening, barbaric, completely unforgivable crime. I know that Londoners have been through terrorism before and this city has a huge resilience. What we also have is the best, most professional security services and the best police in the world to protect us and they are now going to get to the bottom of exactly what’s happened.”

“Enough’s enough. Our message is – enough’s enough. We have weak leaders, weak police. Our police, our leaders tiptoe around this issue. This issue is political Islam. It’s political Islam that’s spreading across this country,” said Tommy Robinson, spokesman for the far-right English Defence League.

UK Prime Minister David Cameron spoke to reporters outside Downing Street, saying: “We will never give in to terror or terrorism in any of its forms.” He added “This was not just an attack on Britain and on the British way of life, it was also a betrayal of Islam and of the Muslim communities who give so much to our country”

A murder inquiry has been launched by police counter-terrorism experts.

DNA on Boston explosive doesn’t match Tsarnaev’s widow

The female DNA and fingerprints found on a piece of one of the Boston marathon explosives does not match those of Katherine Russell, the 24-year-old widow of Tamerlan Tsarnaev. Russell had been under suspicion following the discovery of female DNA, but her lawyers insist she had “no inkling” of the marathon plot and she has reportedly been cooperating with the FBI. However, John Miller, a former assistant FBI director, told “CBS This Morning” that the woman remains central to the ongoing investigation:What continues to puzzle the FBI about Russell is what she knew and when, if anything, Miller said. “What they really want to know from her is, you know, here’s a woman who dated Tamerlan, who converted to Islam after they were married, who … lived in the same apartment — not a big apartment — where bombs were being constructed and pressure cookers were being bought two or three at a time,” Miller said. “They want to know, ‘Is it possible all of this was going on concealed from you or did you know it the whole time?’”Continue Reading… Read More

Tamerlan Tsarnaev: Conspiracy theorist

We’ve spent some time looking at the conspiracy theories that arose after the Boston Marathon Bombing, but it’s worth looking at the conspiracy theorist that allegedly started this all: Tamerlan Tsarnaev. The elder and more radical of the two brothers suspected of perpetrating the attack “believed in basically every conspiracy theory,” as Dave Weigel put it, linking to an AP report showing that Tsarnaev was interested in everything from Alex Jones to “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion,” a seminal anti-Semitic conspiracy tome. It’s not particularly surprising that Tsarnaev would be drawn to a wide range of conspiracy theories, as research shows that people prone to believing one conspiracy theory will likely believe many — even if they’re completely contradictory. And he fits a profile of a type of person likely to be drawn to conspiratorial thinking, considering he was allegedly alienated from and disgruntled with society.Continue Reading… Read More
