Six soldiers have been killed after violence broke out between armed protesters and Libyan special forces.

The violence happened outside a special forces base in the city of Benghazi on Saturday. A military official confirmed the deaths.

Local residents said the men had earlier forced their way into another army compound to steal weapons. It was not immediately clear who the protesters were or what they wanted.

Last week at least 31 people were killed and 100 injured in clashes between armed protesters and militia in the city.

The stand off was with members of the Libya Shield Brigade, made up of former rebel fighters and now aligning itself with the Defence Ministry.

The protesters were demanding that the militia lay down their arms and be replaced with Libya’s regular security forces.

A local councillor has sparked outrage in Italy as she called for the country’s first black minister to be raped.

Integration Minister Cecile Kyenge was targeted on twitter by Dolores Valandro, an elected councillor in northern city of Padua.

Valandro made the comment in reference to the alleged rape of two women by an African man.

Kyenge called the comment “an insult to all Italians”, and that Valandro was trying to incite violence.

Northern League member Valandro’s superiors said that she would be ejected from the party for the comment.

Congo born Kyenge campaigns for immigrant rights to become Italian citizens, and has been regularly targeted by racist abuse since taking up her ministerial role in April.

A jobless bus driver in the US has pleaded not guilty to charges of kidnap and rape over the decade-long abduction of three young women in Ohio.

Ariel Castro appeared in court in Cleveland but did not speak. He is also accused of aggravated murder relating to an accusation that he provoked one woman to miscarry by hitting her.

His lawyer Craig Weintraub hinted at a possible plea deal.

“Mr Castro currently faces hundreds of years in prison with the current charges and it is our hope that we can continue to work toward a resolution to avoid having an unnecessary trial about aggravated murder and the death penalty,” he said.

The prosecution case details how the three young women were allegedly raped and chained up.

Castro was arrested last month after one of them, Amanda Berry, escaped from the house where they were being held and raised the alarm.

They were welcomed home by their families who had not seen them in years. Two were teenagers when they were abducted.

With the results coming in the right in Italy appears to be heading for a debacle in local elections. The left is on course to take all the major cities voting today, with the big prize, Rome, already having fallen to the Democratic party’s challenger Ignazio Marino.

He unseated Gianni Alemanno, standing for Silvio Berlusconi’s PdL party, who conceded defeat in a phone call once the overwhelming margin of defeat, some 20 percentage points, became clear.

However popular disillusionment with party politics has hit turnout hard; in Rome it may be just shy of 50%, when in 2008 it was 63%. Overall turnout nationally appears to be following the same trend.

Italy’s centre-left traditionally fares better in local elections than national ones, but this will be a shot in the arm for the left-led coalition government of Prime Minister Enrico Letta.

A suspected stowaway who was found perched precariously beside the rear propeller of a passenger ferry has been arrested in Spain.

The 48-year-old Algerian man was detained for alleged illegal entry to the country as the boat docked in Tarifa from the Moroccan port of Tangiers.

Carrying a small plastic bag of belongings, he had intended to swim ashore once near the coast.
