An Italian beach resort manager has been spending a second day perched on a ledge of St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican demanding the end to what he calls Italy’s social “massacre” and “political horror show”.

It is the third time in a year that Marcello De Finizio has climbed the dome to protest against the government and EU-imposed austerity measures.

Youths have thrown rocks and other missiles at police for a second night running in a suburb of Stockhom.

Around 100 of them came out on the streets and targeted officers and their cars.

The unrest was in Husby, a low income neighbourhood, home mainly to first or second generation immigrants where around a third of school children leave education with low grades.

Ten cars were set ablaze and one fireman was injured when he was hit by a rock.

The police eventually made six arrests.

“They light a fire somewhere and the fire service goes to the scene of the fire. The police have to escort the fire engines and the stone throwing starts again, “ said police spokeswoman Diana Sundin.

It is not clear what started the riots in a country which has always been proud of its diverse population and welcoming imigartion policies. However this year the government has indicated it is considering introducing quotas.

Major Timothy Peake is set to become the first British astronaut in space for more than 20 years.

Peake, a former apache helicopter pilot with the British army, is expected to visit the International Space Station (ISS) in 2015.

Before that, there is a lot to prepare for – as Peake explained to euronews:

“We do a lot of training in weightlessness, for example parabolic flights. We learn about EVA (Extra Vehicular Activity): how to do space walking. We learn about robotics,” Peake said.

“I’ve trained as a Eurocom, which a communicator with the space station. We actually work with crew on board and help them in their daily jobs. We’re kept very busy while waiting for our mission assignment,” Peake continued.

The UK Minister for Universities and Science David Willetts said: “We’ve got a very successful space industry that is growing at about eight per cent a year.”

“It’s an event like this, sending an astronaut up to the space station, that really brings home to people that we’re serious and it signals that Britain is a space-faring nation and proud of it,” Willetts added.

British Prime Minister David Cameron said Peake’s selection, as one of six astronauts picked from 8,000 hopefuls, was a “landmark” moment for the UK.

Local media reports that the violence was sparked by the fatal shooting of a Husby local by police on May 13.

Police in Israel are investigating a shootout at a bank in the southern city of Be’er Sheva in which a man killed four people before turning his gun on himself.

The assailant is said to have been local, Jewish and in his 40s.

But what was at first thought to have been a bungled attempted robbery, police now think may have been a dispute over the refusal of a loan.

The incident drew comment from the Israeli prime minister:

“This is very serious. I do not remember such an event, certainly not in the last few years and it is not common place in Israel. An attack like this must not be allowed to happen again,” said Prime MInister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Police are looking into whether the gunman had financial difficulties or if he had any other personal dispute with one of the bank workers.

All four victims, they said, were killed by the attacker and did not die in the shootout with security officials.

Living turtles, fish and salamander in tiny bags of water are being sold in Beijing as key rings for children.

To the horror of animal rights activists, the sale of live animals as trinkets is a growing trend in China.

A vendor at Beijing market said “I sell fifty of these a day!”

“I bought one because my child wanted one”, a mother explained

The bags are so small that the creatures can barely move inside and critics say they are likely to die within weeks.

The price tag is little more than the cost of a few sweets.

Although animal rights groups have highlighted the cruelty of these living toys, there is no law in China preventing their sale.
