A celebration of the bike and of the human body. In Brussels around a hundred cyclists rode through the city to draw attention to what they say is the world’s dependency on oil.

It is the ninth year in which the campaigners have stripped off and taken to the saddle to highlight their cause. Police suggested they cover up for the sake of decency.

In Istanbul there have been sporadic clashes as riot police fired, tear gas and turned water cannon on protesters. The roads into Taksim square have been blocked blocked.

Around 1,000 extra riot police have been flown into the city from the country’s provinces while a spokesman for the protesters vowed the group would retake Gezi Park.

It had been the demonstrators heartland. The ramshackle tents have been bulldozed away and the cleaning up operation goes on. Municipal workers have been planting flowers while in contrast a strong police presence maintained security cordons after prime minister Tayyip Erdogan had sent in his security forces to evacuate the area. The action failed to quell the defiance.

“We are not afraid, we are not afraid. We want that dictator prime minister to leave,” said one woman.

In the capital Ankara the unrest grew. On Sunday morning thousands of anti-government protesters took to the streets to show their support for those in Istanbul.

The government reacted by saying the demonstrators are being manipulated by illegal groups seeking to sow instability.

The Confederation of Public Workers Unions has called for a nationwide strike on Monday.

An 8,000 strong police force is tightening security ahead of the G8 summit in Northern Ireland next week.

It is being called the largest police operation of its kind to ever take place in the country. Around half of the officers have been drafted in from elsewhere in the UK.

Activists are also getting ready. More than 1,000 trade unionists, environmentalists and anti-poverty campaigners have marched peacefully through the streets of Belfast. The number of police present outnumbered the protesters.

Many of those marching say they are angry at what they see as an elite club of the world’s richest nations, acting for the interests of big business rather than ordinary people.

The next major protest is planned for the start of the G8.

The two-day G8 Leaders Summit begins on Monday and is being held in a luxury resort in Loch Erne, close to Enniskillen.

A fifth night of unrest in Turkey 05/06/2013 05:45 CET

Hundreds of protesters have continued pouring into Istanbul on Sunday morning, heading for Taksim Square, despite police efforts to deter them.

Extra security forces have been brought in to back up riot police as the city braces itself for more violent confrontations.

Around 500 to 600 people have occupied the central Bosphorous bridge, closing it off to traffic.

Overnight, armoured vehicles sealed off Taksim Square, as police stormed neighbouring Gezi Park to evict protesters.

As police moved in, protesters fled into a hotel at the back of the park, several of them vomiting, as tear gas and blasts from what witnesses said were percussion bombs -designed to create confusion rather than injure – engulfed the park.

Witnesses say that hundreds of people were left injured.

“If you go down on the street you will see hundreds of wounded people. There is nobody to take care of them and there is no (health) equipment,” one protester said.

Meanwile, a pro-government rally is planned in Istanbul on Sunday.

North Korea proposes high-level talks with US

On Sunday KCNA delivered a statement by the North Korea National Defence Commission which said that Washington can pick a date and place for talks and the two sides can discuss a range of issues. It however warned that no preconditions should be attached.  ”(We) propose high-level talks between the North Korean and US governments to ease tensions on the Korean Peninsula, and establish regional peace and security,” the statement said. The move may help defuse tensions which have been running high as Pyongyang threatened nuclear and missile strikes against South Korea and the United States following a round of UN sanctions adopted in response to a nuclear weapons test in February. Iranians see Rohani win as potential game-changer 15/06/2013 17:45 CET

In Tehran, thousands of jubilant Iranians hit the streets to celebrate their presidential election result. It was described as ‘a victory for moderation’ by the new President Hassan Rohani.

The result was a resounding triumph for cleric Rohani and his reform-minded supporters and an emphatic defeat of Iran’s conservative hardliners.

With six candidates in the running, Rohani won more than 50 percent of the vote.

One Tehran resident said he believed that the support of former Presidents Rafsanjani and Khatami, as well as the withdrawal of reformist Aref from the race, contributed to Rouhani’s decisive victory.

Rohani takes the helm of an economy battered by international sanctions, the result of Iran’s bitter dispute with the West over its nuclear programme.

On foreign policy, Rohani has already struck a very different tone to that of outgoing president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Rohani spoke of a new chance “in the international arena” for “those who truly respect democracy and cooperation”.

Matters of national security are the domain of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei so are outside the hands of the president.
