Riots prompt focus on Sweden’s poor immigrant suburbs

Almost a week of rioting in parts of Stockholm has highlighted social problems among the mainly immigrant communities in poor areas of Swedish cities.

Heavy police reinforcements meant Friday night was relatively calm, but there was still some violence for the sixth night running.

For the first time there was also trouble, notably arson attacks, outside the capital.

The rioting is not on the scale seen in some other western European countries in recent years. But it has prompted a national debate on issues such as the assimilation of immigrants, crime and parental responsibility.

Some blame growing inequality – more than in any other developed nation over the past 25 years, according to the OECD.

Sweden’s centre-right government under Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt has lowered taxes and reduced state benefits. Economic growth has outpaced most of Europe but the positive effects have not been equally shared.

“It’s an explosive situation that we have warned of for several years because the new (economically) liberal policies in this country will lead to social unrest,” said community leader Arne Johansson.

“It’s young people who lack a belief in the future and young adults who don’t have jobs and who have missed out on school, and also younger ones who have problems at school and there are also very few activities with youth centres closing,” he added.

One government study showed that up to a third of young people aged 16-29 in the most deprived areas in Sweden’s big cities are unemployed.

But in Husby, scene of the worst rioting, the community mobilised to stop the trouble.

“When it was at its worst and the media painted a black picture of Husby, people living in Husby went outside to solve this. We walked in groups, together with youth workers, the Islamic Cultural Centre, people from the mosque and young people like us from the team and others,” said Alikalay, a youth worker.

“People have felt frustration before, that politicians don’t invest as much in the suburbs, which is true, but choose to invest in the inner city. But you can’t justify violence and it’s always difficult to see that parents – my parents, other people’s parents – are affected by this. They can’t sleep at night, cars are burning, small children can’t safely walk in the streets and stones are thrown,” he said on the sidelines of a football tournament for local schools.

Some in Sweden blame criminality and poor parenting for the unrest; others point the finger at the poor integration of immigrants. The number of asylum-seekers, mostly from war-torn countries such as Syria, Afghanistan and Somalia, increased by 50 percent in 2012 on the previous year.

Opinion polls suggest a majority of people support immigration, although the proportion is falling.

The Integration Minister Erik Ullenhag said Sweden would continue to be an open and tolerant society.

“We can never be in the situation when we let some kids throwing stones represent all the foreign people living in Sweden. We have 15 percent of the Swedish population born abroad today and we’re proud of it and we shouldn’t go down the slippery slope of making people that are making criminal acts represent all the immigrants of Sweden,” he said.

Survivors of Monday’s massive tornado which flattened the town of Moore in Oklahoma have been picking over what’s left of their homes to see if anything can be salvaged.

With at least 24 dead including 10 children, and more than 240 injured, some seriously, locals have realised just what their priorities are.

“Just a few walls that are on the ground, but we were able to save our family, that’s the most important,” said Moore resident Justin Stefon.

The town’s mayor, Glenn Lewis is one of many showing that the spirit to rebuild rather than to leave the region known as Tornado Ally remains strong:

“Where would we go? This is home. Yes, we will build it back, we will probably put safe rooms in all of them to make sure everybody is okay. Everywhere you go there is some kind of disaster but this is home. So we are going to rebuild.”

Harrowing tales have emerged of fear as the tornado approached and of how most of the children who died did so from suffocation when the roof of their school collapsed on them.

Experts have said trauma counselling for their surviving classmates will also be a necessity.

As rescue workers made their final sweep through the ruins making sure no one was left beneath the debris, others have already begun the next stage of putting Moore back on the map.

The German Chancellor was one of only two European women to make it into the top 10.

US First Lady Michelle Obama is rated by Forbes as the fourth most powerful woman, compared to seventh last year, while Brazilian President Rousseff and philanthropist Melinda Gates are second and third respectively.

Hillary Clinton remained in the top 10, ranked fifth, despite no longer holding the post of US Secretary of State.

The 10th annual ranking sees 87-year-old Queen Elizabeth II, the oldest woman on the list, drop down the list from 26th to 40th place.

According to Forbes, this year’s index represents women who are pioneers in politics, business, media, humanitarian concerns, entertainment and the technology industry.

It also features a number of women who are listed due solely to their wealth. All ranked by money, media presence and impact.

As the American state of Washington gets ready to introduce a legal market for recreational-use marijuana, one of the surprise consequences could be better pork on people’s plates. One marijuana grower experimenting with ways to dispose of what’s left over once the sellable marijuana buds have been removed from the plants. Susannah Gross will provide the excess roots, stems and leaves as pig-feed, to see if pigs will get ‘the munchies’, the desire to eat more when under the effect of cannabis.

And the initial results are promising: four pigs fed on the weed waste in the last four months before heading for the abattoir were 20-30 lbs (9-13 kilos) heavier than six other pigs given their usual food when sent to the slaughterhouse.

“They were eating more, as you can imagine,” says Gross, who owns a five-acre farm north of Seattle.

The people of Washington voted in November to legalise recreational marijuana use in the state. The federal US government still considers cannabis as an illegal narcotic, and the Obama administration has yet to clarify what the consequences will be, if any, for people taking advantage of the newly passed state legislation.
