Variety falls prey to Lady Gaga April Fools’ joke

April Fools’ Day is among the worst days of the year for a reporter; just ask the gossip bloggers who, late last night, stopped short of reporting that Lindsay Lohan was pregnant after she said she was with child on Twitter. (Good one, L.L.!)But Variety forget to tear the page off its desk calendar yesterday morning, and when “X-Men: Days of Future Past” director Bryan Singer tweeted that Lady Gaga had joined the upcoming mutant action movie, Variety rushed a story online — one that it’s now taken down. On the Hollywood trade publication’s Twitter feed, the publication noted that “Variety just got April Fooled! Lady Gaga will NOT co-star in the next ‘X-Men’ movie.”Variety recently shuttered its daily edition in favor of a weekly magazine, which launched in late March. The publication’s woes have been well-chronicled on Deadline. Nikki Finke’s site has an owner in common with Variety and fights with it as well as sites like The Wrap and The Hollywood Reporter for scoops — a category into which an unconfirmed tweet from a director announcing casting would fall 364 days a year.Continue Reading… Read More

Air Force Dumps Drone Strike Data Down the Memory Hole

If you need further evidence that
Sen. Rand Paul’s bladder-busting feat last week was timely in
focusing attention on matters droney, it tuns out that the Air
Force has turned shy about drone strike data that it once published
with gusto. As
mentioned at Reason 24/7, where once the Air Force Central Command broke out
the numbers of weapons fired by remotely piloted aircraft so that
there was no question of just how those
4,700 people Sen. Lindsay Graham boasts have been killed by
drones actually met their ends, now the numbers are folded back
into overall Air Force activity.
Brian Everstine and Aaron Mehta
report for Air Force Times:

Last October, Air Force Central Command started tallying weapons
releases from RPAs, broken down into monthly updates. At the time,
AFCENT spokeswoman Capt. Kim Bender said the numbers would be put
out every month as part of a service effort to “provide more
detailed information on RPA ops in Afghanistan.”
The Air Force maintained that policy for the statistics reports
for November, December and January. But the February numbers,
released March 7, contained empty space where the box of RPA
statistics had previously been.

And, to make it more interesting, numbers published in previous
months detailing weapons fired by drones have been scrubbed of that
data. Whoah! Nice use of the memory hole.
To give you an idea of what this means, this is how the data for
January 3 originally looked:

And this is how it looks now:

Hmmm … Is something missing? Whatever could it be? Oh, yeah.
The friggin’ box that’s labeled “Number of Weapons Releases from
Remotely Piloted Drones.” Curious, that. Read More

Man suing supposed “Liz and Dick” producer, alleging insurance scam

Tabloid staple and all-around trainwreck Lindsay Lohan is virtually uninsurable in Hollywood. But that didn’t stop one man from doling out money to support the actress so she could act in Lifetime flop “Liz & Dick.” Michael Braun, who claims to have loaned $110,000 to producer Rick Schwartz for the film, is suing the producer, who he says still owes him $73,000 of the balance. (Braun also now believes that Schwartz had no association with the film). According to the suit, “Schwartz failed to pay back the $110,000 and began providing Braun with misinformation to delay repayment.”

Ali Lohan Steps Out From Lindsay Lohan’s Shadow

While Lindsay Lohan is never out of the spotlight in the U.S., little sister Aliana Lohan has been making a name for herself in South Korea.
