The Swiss parliament has effectively killed off a bill designed to sidestep secrecy laws to allow banks to release clients’ details.

The lower house voted two-to-one against a debate even though the upper house backed it.

The Swiss government warned that without the law banks may be sued by US authorities chasing wealthy American tax dodgers.

Protests in Berlin ahead of Obama visit 19/06/2013 09:42 CET

Barack Obama’s first trip to Berlin as president was portrayed as a visit between friends. Both country’s leading families appeared to get along well – even the rarely seen husband of Chancellor Angela Merkel joined in.

Using the anniversary of the JFK Cold War address, the scene was set at the Brandenburg Gate for a grand gesture.

And under a hot sun Obama called for a cut in US and Russian nuclear weapons:

“After a comprehensive review, I can determine that we can ensure the security of America and our allies and maintain a strong and credible strategic return, while reducing our deployed strategic nuclear weapons by up to one-third. And, I intend to seek negotiated cuts with Russia to move beyond cold war nuclear postures.”

Paying respects to the fallen at the Berlin wall was a must and the presence of Obama’s wife and daughters provided a well received photo opportunity.

It is now up to both governments to assess the true value of the Obama visit.

Thousands of people demonstrated in the Bulgarian capital Sofia against the the three-week old government of Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski.

The unrest was initially sparked by the appointment of Delyan Peevski as head of the security service – a 32 year-old with no security experience, but powerful family connections according to local media.

Parliament voted on June 16 to dismiss Peevski from his post – but it was not enough stop the protests.

One demonstrator said: “The politicians are really afraid. Although they say we’re not many, I believe we’re more and more each day and they’re scared.”

Many Bulgarians want better transparency from their government and more efforts to tackle corruption.

Demonstrations took place in several cities – demanding that the Socialist-led coalition steps down.

Syrian refugees seek shelter in Jordan 28/12/2012 09:55 CET

As World Refugee Day looms, hundreds of Syrian children forced to flee the fighting in their country have decorated kites with messages for world leaders.

At the Zaatari camp in Jordan, currently home to 178,000 people, children scarred by the violence, turmoil and insecurity handed those in power a slice of reality.

Marah Ismael a refugee from Hirak said: “The message I want to send to world leaders is children are being slaughtered before our eyes. I’ve seen my friends killed in front of me, this is forbidden.”

World Refugee Day was established by the United Nations to honour those forced to leave their homes as a result of persecution, conflict and violence.

Conflict in Syria: the brutal and complex situation on the ground

Ibrahim Ahmed from Daraa in Syria appealed to the Arab world: “Save us Arab leaders. I want to go back to Syria because I don’t want to be a refugee.”

The fighting in the country looks set to intensify as pro-Assad Hezebollah fighters are deploying at the frontier with Jordan as they plot to retake the southern Darra province.

Jordan has beefed up border security with Syria as a result.

Industrial tension in Spain against a background of chronically high unemployment came to a head in the Basque country with the forced eviction of 70 workers from their factory near Bilbao.

Police moved in on Tuesday following a court order.

The company, Troqueleria del norte, which carries out die-casting for the car industry, has been in liquidation since last year and its workers have not been paid since January.

Staff had occupied the premises since last month.

The building’s owners, a Breton family, are reportedly demanding 250,000 euros in rent. But the works committee claims the family itself owes more than 17 million euros to the Basque government and other local authorities.

The committee’s president said the workers were being evicted “without having been fired”.

Amid the scuffles at least two police officers were slightly injured.

Mass protests expose anger at the way Brazil is run 18/06/2013 09:06 CET

Around 50,000 flooded the streets of Sao Paulo for another night of protests in Brazil.

Demonstrators took to the streets in some of the largest protests in 20 years over poor public services and the escalating cost of hosting international sporting competitions like the World Cup 2014.

President Dilma Rousseff said she was open to social change, but her words may be falling on deaf ears. One protester explained why they had joined the mass demos:

“It is against the corrupt Brazil that we are living in – health, unemployment, education, everything. Everything’s wrong.”

Another explained, “it’s the fury of an irritated Brazil with this damn corrupt stealing government.”

Riot police struggled to contain the situation in Brazil’s largest city. Shops and banks were vandalised and twenty were arrested for looting.

In an effort to calm the trouble, some city officials vowed to lower bus fares, the subject of the original protests.

The Justice Ministry said it would send extra troops to cities hosting the FIFA confederations cup which kicked off on Saturday.
