Greece witnessed an increase in anti-Semitism in 2012, following the election of members of the extreme right-wing party Golden Dawn to the country’s Parliament, according to the annual US State Department’s report on international religious freedom.

The report characterises Golden Dawn as “a political party openly espousing anti-Semitism and racism and linked to violent attacks against individuals perceived to be immigrants.”

Some anti-Semitic and racist incidents were condemned by the Greek government, states the report, although “observers called on the authorities to do more to counter hate speech and the violent actions of Golden Dawn members.”

The annual US State Department’s report on international religious freedom adds that there were also incidents of “harassment and increasingly violent physical attacks against individuals perceived to be immigrants and refugees, many of whom were Muslim” while “expressions of anti-Semitism increased after voters elected members of Golden Dawn to parliament.”

Further to this, the report suggests the Greek Orthodox Church exercised considerable influence, while some non-Orthodox citizens complained of being treated with suspicion when they spoke of their religious affiliations.
“Members of non-Orthodox religious groups reported incidents of societal discrimination. Members of the Muslim minority in Thrace were under-represented in public sector employment, and no Muslim military personnel advanced to officer ranks,” says the report.

Egypt sent extra troops to Sinai – days after seven members of its security forces were kidnapped there.

26 armoured vehicles and several military helicopters were deployed to the city of el-Arish.

The Sinai peninsula has become increasingly unstable since the overthrow of President Hosni Mubarak two years ago.

One el-Arish resident told euronews
that Egypt’s competing power blocks could be at the root of the unrest:

“The target now is the Egyptian army because it is the most powerful Arab army, and they want to break it. The Muslim Brotherhood came via the Americans to divide the Arab world,” the resident said.

Egypt’s President Mohammed Mursi, a prominent member of the Muslim Brotherhood, said the government will explore all options to get the kidnapped soldiers released – except negotiating with the abductors.

Euronews correspondent Mohammed Shaikhibrahim reported from el-Arish:

“Targeting the Egyptian army raises many questions about who benefits from trying to force the military to engage in Egypt’s complex political situation at this time – especially in the border area, which is particularly sensitive in terms of security,” Shaikhibrahim said.

China’s prime minister has pledged to build trust and cooperation during his visit to India.

Li Keqiang’s first foreign trip since taking office comes just weeks after a military standoff between the Asian giants on their ill-defined border in the Himalayan mountains.

Talks between Li and Indian prime minister Manmohan Singh are expected to focus on trade ties and other bilateral issues.

The Chinese leader has said that the two countries could become a new engine of the world economy.

“World peace and regional stability cannot be a reality without strategic mutual trust between India and China,” said Li.

“Likewise, the development and prosperity of the world cannot be a reality without the cooperation and simultaneous development of China and India.”

Li’s visit sparked protests outside the Indian parliament. A group of right-wing Hindu activists called for him to leave in the wake of the recent border tensions – which saw China being accused of an incursion.

The first major protest against Italy’s new coalition government has taken place in Rome. Organised by the left-wing Fiom union, its message was that more needs to be done to create jobs.

New Prime Minister Enrico Letta, whose centre-left Democratic Party is in a fragile partnership with Berlusconi’s centre-right, stands accused of neglecting a promise to tackle unemployment, and focusing instead on plans to reform property taxes.

“This government needs to break away from what Monti and Berlusconi’s did and focus on new policies. I don’t know if they’ll be able to but that’s what the country needs and that’s why we are here,” said Fiom’s Secretary General, Maurizio Landini.

Italy is stuck in its longest recession for decades and youth unemployment stands at 38 percent.

Letta has set aside 1 billion euros to ensure continued unemployment benefits for workers placed in special temporary redundancy schemes.

Annamaria Parigi, an unemployed metalworker, said:
“The government is passing on the cost of its inaction to workers, pensioners, the unemployed and the desperate. Suicides among those who are out of work or have financial problems are increasing. Those in power now should ask themselves some questions.”

Less than a month after it took office, there is uncertainty over how the government intends to fund its plans, given that it has vowed to stick to its budget targets.

It has to balance its priorities with its pledge to keep Italy’s budget deficit within EU limits of three percent of gross domestic product (GDP).
