UN human rights investigators say they have strong suspicions but not absolute proof that Syrian rebel forces have used the nerve gas sarin.

It follows interviews with victims and doctors in neighbouring countries.

“We collected some witness testimony that made to appear that some chemical weapons were used, in particular nerving (sic) gas and what appears to our investigation (was) that that was used by the opponents, by the rebels,” said Carla del Ponte, a member of the UN investigating team who has also served as an international war crimes prosecutor.

The Geneva-based inquiry gave no details as to when or where the nerve gas may have been used.

It did not find evidence that government forces had resorted to chemical weapons.

The US has said it has “varying degrees of confidence” that Syria’s government has used sarin on its people.

Both President al-Assad’s forces and the rebels have accused each other of employing chemical weapons several times.

Sarin has no colour or smell and can be fatal even in small doses.

Hungary’s prime minister told an international assembly of Jews on Sunday that his government has declared a “zero tolerance” approach to anti-Semitism.

But Viktor Orban stopped short of censuring the far right Jobbik party – which his audience at the World Jewish Congress was keen for him to address.

“Disappointment, anger and hate are on the rise. In this situation, it’s important to say clearly that anti-Semitism is unacceptable and cannot be tolerated;” said Orban.

Congress leaders later accused the government of not drawing a clear enough line.

At a Jobbick rally on Saturday, representatives accused Jews of trying to buy up property to take over Hungary. The party has 43 out of 386 seats in parliament.

A suicide bomber killed at least 11 people when he rammed his car into a convoy in the centre of Somalia’s capital Mogadishu.

A visiting delegation from Qatar was in the vehicles being drive through the city but all have been declared ‘safe’.

The Islamist rebel group al Shabaab has said it was behind the attack and threatened the government with more strikes.

One witness said she saw a lot of people lying on the ground, most of them wounded and crying. “It was a shocking scene!”

The rebels, who want to impose their own version of Islamic law called the Somalian government ‘a puppet of the West’.

The blast tore through the busy ‘Kilometre 4’ road junction in Mogadishu’s commercial and administrative centre.

Qatar has been forging its own closer political ties with the country as it seeks to expand its influence in the region.

Malaysians vote in elections which could see the end of the world’s longest-running coalition

||

Malaysians are voting in a general election which could see the opposition taking power for the first time in over half a century.

Hundreds of people have lined up outside polling stations across the country, many of them first-time voters concerned about high living costs and corruption.

Prime Minister Najib Razak’s ruling Barisan Nasional coalition is up against growing momentum for change especially among young Malaysians.

With the three-party opposition alliance, Pakatan Rakyat under Anwar Ibrahim pledging to clean up politics the result could see ethnic Chinese and Indians rejecting the ruling coalition’s race-based patronage system which has ensured stability but led to corruption.

More then 13 million people are eligible to vote and opinion polls suggest a tight race for the 222 parliamentary seats. There are concerns that accusations of fraud in the run-up to the elections could spill over into street protests.
