500 Europeans fight against Assad in Syria – EU anti-terror chief

“Not all of them are radical when they leave, but most likely many of them will be radicalized there, will be trained,” Gilles de Kerchove said. “And as we have seen this might lead to a serious threat when they get back.”Intelligence agencies are now concerned that some of those currently in Syria could join Islamists groups linked to al-Qaeda and when they return to Europe may launch terrorist attacks. In March, the Netherlands raised its terror threat level to “substantial”, citing an increase in the number of Islamist militants travelling to Syria, as well as the radicalization of Dutch youth.”Close to a hundred individuals have recently left the Netherlands for various countries in Africa and the Middle East, especially Syria,” National Coordinator for Security and Counterterrorism (NCTV) said in a statement in mid-March.Security bodies have increased efforts to track how people are being recruited, especially in Britain and Belgium, according to BBC.In mid-April, Belgian police raided 48 homes across the country and detained six men, suspected to be members of an Islamist group named Sharia4Belgium, which “is part of a broad international jihadist movement.”"We have indications that Sharia4Belgium was sending people to Syria to join terrorist groups there,” Reuters quoted a spokesperson for Belgium’s federal prosecutor as saying.A Salafist group opposed to Assad, it was also suspected of recruiting fighters for Syria’s long-lasting civil war against ruling regime.  ”The recruitment occurred, for example, by youths being spoken to on the street and then invited to private meeting places in Antwerp,” Prosecutor Eric Van der Sypt said at a press-conference earlier in April.Van der Sypt said prosecutors were aware of 33 people with links to the group who were either in or on their way to Syria. In early April the International Centre of for the Study of Radicalization (ICRS) estimated that up to “600 European Muslim have gone to Syria since early 2011,” when the conflict started. The study by ICRS also said Britain accounts for the biggest number of arrivals with up to 134 people joining the cause. The study revealed that up to 5,500 foreign fighters have traveled to Syria since the beginning of the uprising, with some 11 per cent of them originate from Europe.”Based on the conflict totals, we estimate that 70 to 441 Europeans are still currently present in Syria,” ICSR report states. “This suggests that most of the Europeans who have travelled to Syria are still on the battlefield.” Read More

ObamaCare Author Max Baucus Sees “Huge Train Wreck” Coming For Health Law

The latest sign ObamaCare’s
implementation isn’t going well? Even its chief legislative author
thinks it’s heading for disaster.
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act—the legislation
more commonly known as ObamaCare—had many authors, but chief among
them was Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.), the top Democrat on the Senate
Finance Committee. When Baucus at
admitted in 2010 that he had not read every page of the final
health care legislation, his staff went on defense, insisting that
the senator “wrote the bill that passed the Finance Committee” and
then worked on the final version, which was grown out of the
Finance Committee bill. If there’s any one legislator who can
legitimately claim to be the law’s author, it’s Baucus.
So it’s worth paying attention when Baucus says that he thinks
the process of setting up the law’s health insurance exchanges is
marching towards catastrophe. At a Senate hearing on Wednesday
morning, Baucus
said he is “concerned that not every state, including Montana,
will have an insurance marketplace established in time.” And he
warned Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius that
he sees “a huge train-wreck coming down.”
Given the
lack of confidence coming from officials in charge of
implementing the law, the
worries expressed by health insurance industry executives who
are supposed to sell through the exchanges, the
delay of a key component of the small-business exchanges, and
the recent
revelation that building the exchanges has already cost twice
as much as expected, this is not exactly surprising.
It is, however, something of a crow-eating moment for Baucus—or
at least it should be. At the same town meeting where he said he
had not read the entire text of the final law, he also insisted
that critics of the bill would change their tune. “It’s not
perfect, nothing’s perfect, but I’m telling you, ma’am, it’s a good
start,” he said to a woman expressing concerns about the bill.
“Mark my words, several years from now you’re going to look back
and say, ‘eh, maybe it isn’t so bad.’” Several years later, it
looks as if maybe it is. Read More

Foreign ministers at the G8 meeting in London have resolved to work together to end sexual violence in combat zones. The declaration calls for urgent action to combat what it describes as a “culture of impunity”.

The UN High Commission for Refugees Special Envoy, Angelina Jolie, was met by the British Foreign Secretary William Hague.

He described as “horrific” the use of rape and sex attacks as weapons of war, while the actress said the problem could be prevented and had to be confronted.

“I have heard survivors of rape, from Bosnia to the DRC say that they feel that world simply does not care about them. And who could blame them? For too long they have been the forgotten victims of war, responsible for none of the harm but baring the worst of the pain. But today, I believe their voices have been heard,” Angelina Jolie said.

After launching an awareness campaign last year, Hague and Jolie visited the Nzulo refugee camp near Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo in March. Britain has pledged 10 million pounds (11.75 million euros) in new funding to tackle sexual violence in war zones.

The charity Save The Children has said the majority of victims are children.
