Germany ‘pulls the plug’ on Euro Hawk drone project 16/05/2013 14:44 CET

After Germany’s scrapping of an expensive project involving the purchase of US-made drones, the opposition are now demanding the defence minister’s resignation.

They claim Thomas de Maizière knew well in advance that the “Euro Hawk” would not get flight permission for European airspace, but held back information.

The minister will make a statement on June 5.

Thousands of people took to the streets of Manhattan on Monday to protest against the murder of a gay man who was shot as he walked with a companion.

CBS reported that the attacker called the two men “faggots” before shooting 32-year-old Mark Carson in the head. Police say a man has been charged with murder as a hate crime.

The attack occurred in the busy Greenwich Village district of New York, an area which had previously been considered a gay-friendly neighbourhood.

The crowds of demonstrators met at the local Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center and marched to the spot where Carson was killed, shouting the words “We’re here! We’re queer!“and “Homophobia’s got to go”.

The victim’s aunt, who attended the rally, told reporters: “The family would like to have justice served, so that Mark’s death is not in vain”. She described her nephew as “a loving and caring person”.

The city’s first openly gay City Council speaker, Christine Quinn joined the demonstration, along with Edie Windsor who currently has a pivotal case to win the same rights for gay couples before the Supreme Court.

The events have been a shock to an area that was at the centre of the gay rights movement in 1969, when a police raid on a gay bar sparked the Stonewall riots that came to symbolise gay resistance to intolerance and discrimination.

More recently, homophobic attacks have been on the rise and police have confirmed that bias-related crimes have risen to 22 so far this year, compared with 13 in the same period in 2012.

Elsewhere in the world homophobic attacks have also been in the news: in the UK a gay couple who were beaten by a gang of youths have urged MPs to moderate their language when debating same-sex marriage. They are worried that opponents to the new marriage laws are legitimising homophobic attitudes.

Plane with over 130 aboard catches fire on landing at Moscow’s Vnukovo airport (VIDEO)

The UTair airline plane had arrived in Moscow from the southern Russian city of Stavropol. Boing 737-400 is a medium-range, narrow-body jet airliner. Approximate range: 5,000 km. Overall length: 36.5 meters. Wingspan: 28.9 meters. First flight took place on 19 February 1988, entering service on September 15, 1988. Capable of carrying up to 168 passengers. Cockpit crew: two members. “The plane’s left landing gear leg caught fire upon landing. Preliminary reports suggest the brake wheels were destroyed,” Ria Novosti news agency has quoted a police source, adding that the airport was closed at 7:48 am Moscow time (0308 GMT) and reopened at about 10:00 am after the aircraft had been removed from the runway. An unnamed fireman at the scene confirmed to the Russian news channel Russia 24, that the incident had been “dangerous.”The plane was carrying 136 people but none of the 129 passengers or 7 crew members were injured in the incident.Despite the plane being nearly full, everyone was evacuated promptly, according to one of the passengers.”The plane banked on landing. However, it landed quite successfully. Then the flight attendant announced the evacuation. Passengers were hurried down escape chutes. Passengers saw the burst wheel and fire. “Within three minutes there were no passengers left onboard,” according to Evgeny Popov, a reporter for Russia 2, who coincidentally happened to be on the flight. The airport had to divert 23 flights to neighboring airports, as the emergency unfolded. The last emergency situation took place at Vnukovo airport on December 29, 2012, when a Tu-204 aircraft belonging to Russian budget airline Red Wings performed a hard-landing and skidded off the runway, crashing into a highway. The plane, flying from the Czech Republic, was practically empty, with only crew of eight on board. Five of them were killed. Read More

The US has criticised Russia’s recent delivery of anti-ship missiles to President Bashar al-Assad’s government in Syria.

With a range of 300 km, the Yakhont missiles could threaten warships in the Mediterranean reducing the capacity of a possible Western intervention.

It comes just 10 days after Washington and Moscow agreed on plans to hold a peace conference. Top US military officer General Dempsey lamented the decision.

“It’s, at the very least, an unfortunate decision that will embolden the regime and prolong the suffering. So, it’s ill-timed and very unfortunate,” said the General.

UN chief Ban Ki-moon met Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday in the hope of agreeing on a date for the peace talks between government members and the opposition, but nothing has been confirmed.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has stated that the arms transfer to Damascus was not in violation of international law.

More than 80,000 people have died in the uprising and 1.5 million have fled across the borders.

The pressure is growing on world powers to find a solution as concerns grow over the exportation of the conflict to neighbouring countries.

Russia is reported to have sent advanced anti-ship missiles to Syria, despite pleas from Washington and elsewhere to stop supplying President al-Assad’s forces.

Officials in the US are quoted as saying the latest Yakhont surface-to-air missiles were delivered
recently.

Some observers think one reason Russia might supply advanced Russian weaponry would be to counter any Western intervention.

But Moscow’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said he did not understand the fuss.

“We haven’t hidden the fact that we supplied Syria with arms as per a signed contract, neither violating any international agreements, nor violating our own laws that pertain to export control – some of the strictest in the world. And most importantly, we supply an anti-aircraft system, and it doesn’t create any imbalance of power in the region, or (give the Syrian government) any kind of advantages in the fight against the opposition,” he said.

He spoke as the UN Secretary General was in Russia continuing to push plans for an international conference on Syria, which would include government and opposition figures.

Ban Ki-moon called on Damascus to allow UN inspectors to investigate the reported used of chemical weapons.

“Our team is ready at any time. Within 24 to 48 hours notice, they can immediately conduct an investigation. I again urge the Syrian authorities to be flexible and allow our teams to have an on-site investigation,” he said.

Sugar producer tops Russia’s largest landowner list

Prodimex has 16 sugar factories in 3 different provinces, and produces over 1.1 million tons of sugar a year. The company’s general director, Viktor Aleksakhin told Vedomosti that production requires such a large land holding due to the nature of sugar beet cultivation – which must be replanted on a different field each year. Russia accounts for a sixth of the world’s landmass and has several private land owners, with the top five having ties to agricultural production.  At the beginning of 2012, agricultural land in Russia was 196 million hectares, 115 are fertile and in use. In April 2013, the Russian Ministry of Agriculture said the industry was ‘unprofitable’, and only made possible by state subsidies. RusAgro, which specializes in pig breeding, and production of sugar and cooking oil in the Moscow region, owns 452,000 hectares. Vamin, a dairy specialist in Tartarstan that has recently declared bankruptcy, owns 450,000 hectares. Siberian agricultural major Sakho has 400,000 hectares and is owned by State Duma Deputy Airat Khairullina. Tatar agro-company Krasny Vostok Agro has 350,000 hectares. Before Prodimex was founded in 1992, nearly all sugar was imported from Ukraine.America’s cattle kingdomKings of agriculture dominate landholding in Russia, but in the US, it’s a millionaire ranch and cattle club. John Malone, Liberty Media Chairman, owns almost twice as much land as Russia’s largest sugar producer, about 890,000 hectares (2.2 million acres) which combined are the equivalent of 150 Manhattans. Malone owns ranches in Wyoming, Nebraska, Colorado, and New Mexico. The most famous is ‘The Bell Ranch’, a 290,100 acre cattle ranch which he bought in 2010 for a listed, but not confirmed price, of $83 million. Malone’s equities are widespread. Liberty Global agreed to buy Britain’s Virgin Media cable company for $16 billion in February 2013. Malone also has diversified interests in US sports teams (the Atlanta Braves) and media (Starz channel). Land has made a comeback – from cattle, private ski resorts, hunting and fishing clubs, to Maine coastline – for American entrepreneurs who prefer to take a stake in natural real estate to diversify and hedge their assets against the risky gold, oil, and stock prices. With an improving US housing market, land holdings are likely to appreciate, especially those acquired during the recession.Media mogul Ted Turner, the owner of CNN has over 2 million acres of land spread through New Mexico, Colorado, Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, and Florida. The grand Vermejo Park ranch in New Mexico and Colorado is 590,823 acres and his hunting sanctuary in Florida, where he has residence is 30,000 acres. Read More
