Saudi Web Sites Under Attack Following Surveillance Accusations

Several Saudi Web sites came under attack this week by hackers who identify themselves as Anonymous, the loose hacking collective. Hackers said their motive was two-fold. They were retaliating for what they claim was a murder, and also for a report earlier this week by a U.S. security researcher who said he was approached by a Saudi telecom company to help monitor Saudi citizens’ mobile communications. In the aftermath of the Mother’s Day shooting in New Orleans, the motive for the attack is still not clear. Nineteen people, including two children were hurt when one or more people opened fire on the crowd following the main procession. The injuries are said to be not life-threatening, although a number of people required surgery.

The Mayor of New Orleans, Mitch Landrieu, told reporters that the police were working really hard on finding the people responsible and asked for help from the public: “there were hundreds of people there – and somebody saw something,” he said.

The attacks took place in a deprived area of New Orleans, which is still recovering from the effects of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and which suffers from some of the highest levels of gun crime in the US. The incident comes hot on the heels of a failed attempt by President Obama to introduce checks on people buying guns over the internet.

Five killed in Seattle shooting

Police responded to an emergency call from the apartment building, which is located 20 miles south of Seattle, around 9:30 p.m. Sunday.  After reaching the complex, officers found two wounded men in the parking lot, one of whom was armed.“When officers arrived there were still shots being fired,” police spokeswoman Cathy Schrock said in a statement published by AP.“As officers assessed the scene, two males could be seen in the parking lot injured. An officer attempted to rescue the man, and as the (police officer) approached, one of the males on the ground reached for a weapon,” she added. After the injured man reached for his gun, all eight police officers opened fire on him. The armed man, who police believe is the suspected shooter, subsequently died, but it is unclear whether that was a result of police gunfire or previous injuries. While searching the scene, police found a third wounded man in the parking lot and two dead bodies in the complex. One man was found dead in an apartment, while a woman’s body was found in another unit. Police speculate that the woman may have died from stray gunfire. The three injured men in the parking lot, one of whom was the suspected shooter, all died from their injuries.Schrock said that it appears there was a gun battle among the four men who were killed, and that the woman was accidentally hit by a stray bullet. Officers at the Federal Way Police Department have not yet determined a motive behind the shooting, and are currently questioning neighbors to gather information.“We’re going to continue to go door to door in hopes that we can find some additional witnesses, and hopefully we won’t be finding any more victims,” Schrock said. “We still don’t have any idea what started this disturbance.”Authorities believe there was no other shooter involved and that there is no further threat to the public.“At this time, we are not looking for any additional suspects,” Schrock said.A witness described the scene to ABC News, recounting how he heard gunfire and saw police officers quickly flooding the scene. “There were a couple of shots, and then cops just came storming in with cars,” the young man said. “It was like three at first, and then one after another… cops were just rolling in. And then a guy came in with an automatic. We heard shots, and the guy told us to leave. But we came back and there were more cop cars pouring in.”The eight police officers that opened fire on the suspected shooter have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation – a standard procedure practiced by the police department. Investigators are trying to establish a motive for the Boston Marathon bombings.

Specialist teams are waiting to interview Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the 19 year-old suspected of carrying out the attack.

The young man is seriously injured in a Boston hospital, after he was captured late on Friday following a huge manhunt.

His elder brother, Tamerlan, was killed in a shootout with police.

A picture of Dzhokhar as a likable, sociable young man is emerging.
He was known at the local mosque, but was by no means devout:

Anwar Kazmi is from the student’s local mosque in Boston:
“We can only describe him as an infrequent visitor. And when I say visitor, I mean he would come here for the Friday prayers, and this happened only within the last year and a half or so”.

Austin Hightower, is a fellow student and friend of Dzhokhar:
“He was just the nicest guy. He liked a smoke, he liked girls, he drank at some of the parties he came down, so he wasn’t a loner, he was definitely social. That’s why I can’t make sense of it.”

Dzhokar was hiding in a boat in the suburb of Watertown when he was apprehended after the vessel’s owner spotted blood on the boat and called the police.

The student was shot in the throat and cannot speak due to injuries to his tongue.

It has emerged that elder brother Tamerlan had been interviewed by the FBI in 2011 after Russian security services raised concerns that he was a follower of radical Islam.

The FBI said no evidence of terrorist activity was found at the time.

No “cyber Pearl Harbor” on the horizon

Contrary to former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta’s ominous warning last year that the U.S. could be vulnerable to a “cyber Pearl Harbor,” director of national intelligence James Clapper said there were no current cyberthreats of this scale to U.S. infrastructure. As Wired’s Kim Zetter reported on Clapper’s comments to the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence on Tuesday, he said “that lack of skills on the part of most attackers and the ability to override attacks on critical infrastructure with manual controls would make such attacks unfeasible in the near future. He also said that nation states that might have the skills to pull off such an attack lack the motive at this point.”Clapper stated (via Wired):Continue Reading… Read More
