The mayor of Montreal, Michael Applebaum, has been arrested on fraud charges linked to real estate deals worth tens of thousands of euros.

It is the latest in a series of scandals involving Canadian local politics and comes months after his predecessor Gerald Tremblay quit over corruption accusations.

َApplebaum is Montreal’s first Anglophone mayor in a century and pledged to stamp out fraud when he took office last November.

He faces charges relating to acts he is said to have committed as leader of Côte-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grâce borough between 2006-11.

A fifth night of unrest in Turkey 05/06/2013 05:45 CET

Hundreds of protesters have continued pouring into Istanbul on Sunday morning, heading for Taksim Square, despite police efforts to deter them.

Extra security forces have been brought in to back up riot police as the city braces itself for more violent confrontations.

Around 500 to 600 people have occupied the central Bosphorous bridge, closing it off to traffic.

Overnight, armoured vehicles sealed off Taksim Square, as police stormed neighbouring Gezi Park to evict protesters.

As police moved in, protesters fled into a hotel at the back of the park, several of them vomiting, as tear gas and blasts from what witnesses said were percussion bombs -designed to create confusion rather than injure – engulfed the park.

Witnesses say that hundreds of people were left injured.

“If you go down on the street you will see hundreds of wounded people. There is nobody to take care of them and there is no (health) equipment,” one protester said.

Meanwile, a pro-government rally is planned in Istanbul on Sunday.

Morsi says Egypt cuts all ties with Damascus, calls for Syria no-fly zone

“We have decided to close down the Syrian embassy in Cairo,” said Morsi during a conference of Sunni Muslim clerics in support of the Syrian uprising at Cairo Indoor Stadium, according to local newspaper Ahram online. “The Egyptian envoy in Damascus will also be withdrawn.” The decision comes into effect Saturday. The President added that Hezbollah, the Shiite Islamic militant group based in Lebanon.  “We stand against Hezbollah in its aggression against the Syrian people,” Morsi said. “There is no space or place for Hezbollah in Syria.”  Hezbollah fighters  have  reportedly been fighting alongside Syrian pro-government troops against the opposition forces in the ongoing conflict.  Addressing the massive crowd at the stadium, the Egyptian president said “the Egyptian people support the struggle of the Syrian people, materially and morally, and Egypt, its nation, leadership … and army, will not abandon the Syrian people until it achieves its rights and dignity.” Morsi urged the international powers not to hesitate to enforce a no-fly zone over Syria. His supporters chanted: “From the free revolutionaries of Egypt: We will stamp on you, Bashar!” The US has been giving consideration to the issue of setting up a no-fly zone across Syria and possibly along Jordan’s border after claims that nerve gas was used by the Syrian government, sources told Reuters. “Washington is considering a no-fly zone to help Assad’s opponents,” a senior diplomat told the agency.  But Russian Foreign minister Sergey Lavrov has stressed that any attempt to establish the no-fly zone would be a violation of international law. “There have been leaks from western media regarding the serious consideration to create a no-fly zone over Syria through the deployment of Patriot anti-aircraft missiles and F-16 jets in Jordan,” Lavrov said. “You don’t have to be a great expert to understand that this will violate international law.”  However, while calling for foreign interference into the Syrian conflict, Morsi has warned against any unrest at home as massive anti-government protests are planned to take place on June 30. “There is no place for the troublemakers [who threat] the nation’s security and stability. We shall decisively stop them,” he said as quoted by Ahram Online. Stressing that he does not mean the opposition he said that “remnants of the former regime want to drag the country to chaos.” Read More

Calls for police sackings in Turkey as Erdogan returns 06/06/2013 05:05 CET

Hundreds of protesters continue to occupy Gezi Park in Istanbul, despite calls by the Turkish Prime Minister for them to withdraw.

On Saturday morning, the Taksim Platform group put out a statement saying they would continue with the sit-in until their demands are met. The list includes calls for arrested protesters to be released, police to be punished for any violence and the future of the park to be guaranteed.

Turkish Prime Minister, Tayyip Erdogan told protesters on Friday that he would put redevelopment plans on hold until a court ruled on it.

Protesters, however, say they do not trust him.

“We do not have any confidence in (Turkish Prime Minister) Recep
Tayyip Erdogan nor Mayor Huseyin Avni Mutlu. The Istanbul
Mayor said that they would not attack but they did. They are playing games with us here,” said one man.

In Ankara on Saturday, police detained dozens of protesters who had gathered on the streets. Water cannons and smoke grenades were used to disperse the protest.

The Turkish Prime Minister has called for pro-government rallies to be held this weekend, one in Ankara on Saturday and another in Istanbul on Sunday.

The unprecedented wave of protest against Erdogan and his AK Party began after a police crackdown on peaceful campaigners in the park two weeks ago.

Czech police have charged 7 people after a nationwide raid of government and company offices, as well as private homes.

The sweep was part of a crackdown on organised crime and corruption which has seen several arrests, including the most senior aide to Prime Minister Petr Necas.

The scandal is threatening to engulf the Czech Prime Minister, but he is so far refusing to heed opposition calls for him to resign.

Necas insists he has done nothing wrong and says he hopes the police investigation can be relied on: “I would like to trust that the police are working independently and without any political bias.”

Police said the raid, which saw millions of euros as well as gold confiscated, was part of an investigation dating back to early 2012.

Czechs say they see corruption as one of the country’s biggest problems.

Hundreds of assault rifles, hand guns, bazookas and ammunition have been destroyed in Bosnia. Authorities want to reduce the number of illegal arms across the Balkan nation.

Bosnian Muslims, Croats and Serbs who were at war in the 1990s, held onto their weapons in fear of renewed conflict.

The arms were taken to Bosnia’s biggest steel factory to be melted down and the metal recycled.
