O’Reilly lies about Fordham

The lies came thick and fast when Bill O’Reilly took on the Ann Coulter at Fordham University story, one month late, on Monday night.”I didn’t know this, but Fordham University banned Ann Coulter,” O’Reilly began breathlessly. In fact, the reason O’Reilly “didn’t know this” is that it didn’t happen. Here’s what happened: Fordham College Republicans invited Coulter to speak. Fordham President Joseph McShane wrote a letter lamenting their choice but supporting their right to make it. The College Republicans wrote a letter announcing they’d earlier “rescinded” the Coulter invitation, before McShane’s rebuke, and lamenting that he hadn’t spoken to them before going public with his reservations. Dissident Fordham College Republicans wrote letters complaining that their club had cancelled Coulter, but none of them claimed she’d been “banned.” I wrote about all of this Nov. 9 when it happened, but it was a Friday night, and O’Reilly was probably otherwise occupied.Continue Reading… Read More

News Corp. To Shutter Its iPad Magazine, The Daily, on December 15th

(Photo: Digital Trends)
Rupert Murdoch’s less than two-year-old foray into digital-only publishing has officially come to an end with the news that The Daily, News Corp.’s iPad-only magazine, will cease publication on December 15th. Some of The Daily’s assets and 120 employees will transition over to other News Corp. entities; Jesse Angelo, its editor-in-chief, will serve as the new publisher of the New York Post.
Mr. Murdoch wrote in a press release:
From its launch, The Daily was a bold experiment in digital publishing and an amazing vehicle for innovation. Unfortunately, our experience was that we could not find a large enough audience quickly enough to convince us the business model was sustainable in the long-term. Therefore we will take the very best of what we have learned at The Daily and apply it to all our properties. Under the editorial leadership of Editor-in-Chief Col Allan and the business and digital leadership of Jesse, I know The New York Post will continue to grow and become stronger on the web, on mobile, and not least, the paper itself. I want to thank all of the journalists, digital and business professionals for the hard work they put into The Daily.
The news comes on the heels of downsizing that took place at the iPad mag this past summer, when it went from 170 employees to 120.
News Corp.’s brazen bet on an iPad-only format raised eyebrows when it was announced two years ago, and it may have been the mag’s inability to expand its audience within the cluttered app market that led to its demise.
While many seem saddened by the news, new media evangelists on Twitter have already taken to gloating. “How well did that pay wall religion work at The Daily,@rupertmurdoch?” tweeted CUNY journalism professor Jeff Jarvis. Read More

Geithner invites GOP counteroffer in fiscal cliff talks

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is ready to entertain Republican proposals for spending cuts, but GOP lawmakers must first commit to higher tax rates on the rich and specify what additional spending cuts they want in a deal to avoid the looming “fiscal cliff,” Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said.”The ball really is with them now,” Geithner, one of the president’s chief negotiators with Capitol Hill, said during appearances on five Sunday talk shows. He acknowledged that Republicans are “having a tough time trying to figure out what they can do, what they can get support from their members for.” The White House “might need to give them a little more time to figure out where they go next.”Geithner presented congressional leaders Thursday with Obama’s postelection blueprint for averting the combination of hundreds of billions in tax increases and spending cuts that will take effect beginning in January if Washington doesn’t act to stop it.But House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, dismissed the plan as “not serious,” merely a Democratic wish list that couldn’t pass his chamber.Continue Reading… Read More
