North Korea fired three short-range missiles from its east coast on Saturday, South Korea’s Defence Ministry said, but the purpose of the launches was unknown.
Launches by the North of short-term missiles are not uncommon, but the ministry would not speculate whether these latest launches were part of a test or training exercise.
“North Korea fired short-range guided missiles twice in the morning and once in the afternoon off its east coast,” an official at the South Korean Defence Ministry spokesman’s office said by telephone.
The official said he would not speculate on whether the missiles were fired as part of a drill or training exercise.
“In case of any provocation, the ministry will keep monitoring the situation and remain on alert,” he said.
A Japanese government source, quoted by Kyodo news agency, noted the three launches, but said none of the missiles landed in Japan’s territorial waters.
Tension on the Korean peninsula has subsided in the past month after running high for several weeks following the imposition of tougher U.N. sanctions against Pyongyang following its third nuclear test in February.
The North had for weeks issued nearly daily warnings of impending nuclear war with the South and the United States.
North Korea conducts regular launches of its Scud short-range missiles, which can hit targets in South Korea.
It conducted a successful launch of a long-range missile last December, saying it put a weather satellite into orbit. The United States and its allies denounced the launch as a test of technology that could one day deliver a nuclear warhead.
During the weeks of high tension, South Korea reported that the North had moved missile launchers into place on its east coast for a possible launch of a medium-range Musudan missile. The Musudan has a range of 3,500 km, putting Japan in range and possibly the U.S. South Pacific island of Guam.

A Spanish judge has ordered the former chairman of Caja Madrid to be put in jail in a high profile investigation into banking irregularities.
Considered a flight risk bail was set a 2.5 million euros for Blesa, as an inquiry is carried out over Caja Madrid’s purchase of a US bank in the midst of the economic crisis in 2008.
This is the first time a top Spanish banker has been jailed in 20 years. The plaintiff ‘Manos Limpias’ (a right-wing union representing Spanish public employees) celebrated the news.
Miguel Bernard, ‘Manos Limpias’ union representative said,
“The court’s decision gives an example to follow.”
“It is also a warning for everybody, because what the saving banks are doing in the finance area in this country is a big scandal,” he continued.
Caja Madrid merged with several banks in 2010 to form Bankia, which required a 22 billion euro rescue, forcing Spain to call on EU bailout funds.
The eurozone’s fourth largest economy has had to pass many unpopular austerity measures as a result of the crisis, making banks the focus of much public anger.

Morocco’s 21st century day of terror is remembered every May 16. It is 10 years since Casablanca was rocked by five explosions in twenty minutes. They killed 45 people and injured over 100, the country’s worst-ever terrorist attack.
Several NGOs got together in the city on Thursday to call for peace and unity to counter extremist ideologies.
“We are still living in this painful life; we ask all Muslims in Morocco to become a model for Arab and Muslim world and to not participate
in terrorism,” said victim Mohammed Karam.
In Rabat the 10th anniversary was marked by Salafists who say that ever since the bombings they have been persecuted and imprisoned.
“We have organised this sit-in to demand the truth about the explosions of 16 May 2003 in Casablanca. Ten years later we still do not know the real cause of these explosions. These events have caused thousands of casualties among Islamists who have been tortured and imprisoned, and all without us really knowing who was behind the attacks,” said coordinator Anas el Halaoui.
The attacks were on Western or Jewish targets; the first carried out in Morocco by Moroccans. Six European lives were lost in total, and the country was shocked by the indiscriminate carnage of the suicide bombers.

Texas homeless describe their ordeal after deadly tornadoes

Flattened homes and fences, trees and debris scattered across yards, that is what remains of North Texas. 20,000 homes and businesses are thought to still be without power after 10 violent tornadoes slammed into several small communities there Wednesday evening, local time.
At least six people have been killed. Names of the victims haven not yet been released but authorities have confirmed they were all adults. Dozens have been injured and hundreds left homeless.
Granbury city was hit the worst as the tornado ripped through two neighborhoods. 90 people have been evacuated there.
Gripping hold of her 9 month old daughter, Granbury resident Elizabeth Tovar describes the moment her and her family ran for cover:
“We were all, like, hugging in the bathtub and that’s when it started happening. I heard glass shattering and I knew my house was going. And we looked up and then, like, on top of the bathtub the whole ceiling was gone. And that was when we knew we were, we were probably gone, we were in trouble.”
Rescue workers are continuing to comb through wreckage searching for the seven people thought to be missing.
