Turkey – Mounting police violence against journalists covering “Occupy Gezi”

Reporters Without Borders strongly condemns the continuing arbitrary arrests and escalating violence against journalists covering anti-government demonstrations in Turkey. At least seven journalists were briefly arrested yesterday in Istanbul. Violence spread after the police retook Istanbul’s Gezi Park on the evening of 15 June. Media personnel were kept at a distance from the police operation and access to Taksim Square was denied to all journalists who could not produce a press card. (…) Read More

An 8,000 strong police force is tightening security ahead of the G8 summit in Northern Ireland next week.

It is being called the largest police operation of its kind to ever take place in the country. Around half of the officers have been drafted in from elsewhere in the UK.

Activists are also getting ready. More than 1,000 trade unionists, environmentalists and anti-poverty campaigners have marched peacefully through the streets of Belfast. The number of police present outnumbered the protesters.

Many of those marching say they are angry at what they see as an elite club of the world’s richest nations, acting for the interests of big business rather than ordinary people.

The next major protest is planned for the start of the G8.

The two-day G8 Leaders Summit begins on Monday and is being held in a luxury resort in Loch Erne, close to Enniskillen.

At least 27 killed in Iraq bombings

Two car bombs went off in the southern city of Basra, 420km to the southeast of Baghdad, leaving at least five dead and 10 wounded, police pointed out. Next, bombings took place in Najaf, Nassiriya, Kut, Hilla, Tuz Khurmato, as well as in Mahmudiya, southern Baghdad. Six police officers were also shot dead on the outskirts of the northern town of Mosul, at a checkpoint. The deadliest blasts took place in and near the central city of Kut, where two parked car bombs targeted an industrial area and a gathering of construction workers, police told AP. No one has claimed responsibility for the attacks yet, but the country has seen an increase in activity by Sunni Islamist insurgents since the beginning of this year. In May alone, over 1,000 people were murdered in militant attacks, according to the UN estimates – the numbers which make the month the deadliest since the sectarian massacres in 2006 and 2007.
