Toy gun v recession: Portuguese man robs bank to buy medicine

“I needed a few hundred euros for medication. Also we had no food at home. This is what I bought with the money that was stolen. I took about a thousand euros,” Augusto Costa told RT.Costa turned to crime after he couldn’t afford to pay the medical bills for his now ex-wife who suffers from Multiple Sclerosis.Today Costa is a convicted bank robber.He chose his bank branch as the target, blaming them and Portugal government for what happened to him.“They robbed me, so I robbed them. I’m not proud, but I think the state forced me into this position,” Costa explained his actions.In the interview to RT’s Peter Oliver, Costa spoke about the day when he took a toy plastic gun and headed to his bank. In his delightful memoir “Uncle Tungsten”, the eminent neurologist and writer Oliver Sacks recounts the swashbuckling chemical adventures of his teenage years, sparked when a sympathetic uncle got him hooked on to the wonders of chemistry. For me the most memorable image from that book is one of the young Sacks standing on a bridge on a river and successively dropping a few grams of the alkali metals – from lithium to cesium – in the water to observe their reaction. Lithium causes little reaction, sodium dances on the surface with a flame while cesium roars like a beast with much sound and fury. Sacks says that after that incident he never forgot the trends in reactivity of the alkali metals, an important principle that’s often taught in high school and college. John Oliver to guest host “Daily Show” starting June 10

Jon Stewart will go on an 8-week hiatus (previously reported as 12) from hosting “The Daily Show” beginning Monday, June 10, Comedy Central has announced.Stewart is taking a break from hosting the show to direct his first film, “Rosewater,” an adaptation from BBC’s journalist Maziar Bahari’s harrowing memoir of imprisonment in Iran, for which Stewart also wrote the screenplay. Stewart is slated to return on Tuesday, September 3.John Oliver, who has been a “Daily Show” correspondent for the past seven years, will guest host in Stewart’s place. “Don’t worry, it’s still going to be everything that you love about ‘The Daily Show,’ just without the thing that you love the most about it,” said Oliver in a press release.
