At least six people have been killed in the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk, after three car bombs exploded near a market on Tuesday May 21.

A local resident said: “They didn’t distinguish between Arab, Kurd and Turkmen in the market. But this is the destiny of the Iraqi people – no more bloody Tuesday or bloody Wednesday because Iraq is bleeding from north to south.”

Amid escalating sectarian tensions in Iraq, more than 200 people have reportedly been killed in the country over the past week.

A car bomb blast in the central city of Hillah, targeting Shi’ite worshippers outside a mosque, killed at least nine people on May 20.

Technology giant Apple has been accused by a US Senate committee of tax evasion for allegedly exploiting the differences between American and Irish tax laws.

According to the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, Apple has not acted illegally but by using an unusual tax structure has managed to keep billions of dollars of profits tax-free in Irish subsidiaries. The report comes a day before Apple’s CEO is due to testify before Congress on the matter.

The main subsidiary, which includes Apple’s retail stores throughout Europe, has not paid any tax in the last five years. The Senate report shows that the Cork-based subsidiary received $29.9 billion in dividends from 2009-2012, which equates to 30 percent of Apple’s total worldwide net profits.

Apple has denied the claims saying it does not use “tax gimmicks“ and indicated it paid nearly $6 billion in taxes to the US Treasury in 2012.

But committee member John McCain told reporters: “Apple claims to be the largest US corporate taxpayer, but by sheer size and scale, it is also among America’s largest tax avoiders.”

The Senate group is examining the methods used by large corporations to move profits offshore. Many large firms avoid repatriating their foreign earnings to escape the top 35% tax rate.

Ireland has said it is not to blame for Apple’s low global tax payments. Deputy Prime Minister Eamon Gilmore told Irish station RTE, “They are not issues that arise from the Irish taxation system…They are issues that arise from the taxation systems in other jurisdictions”.

Thousands of people took to the streets of Manhattan on Monday to protest against the murder of a gay man who was shot as he walked with a companion.

CBS reported that the attacker called the two men “faggots” before shooting 32-year-old Mark Carson in the head. Police say a man has been charged with murder as a hate crime.

The attack occurred in the busy Greenwich Village district of New York, an area which had previously been considered a gay-friendly neighbourhood.

The crowds of demonstrators met at the local Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center and marched to the spot where Carson was killed, shouting the words “We’re here! We’re queer!“and “Homophobia’s got to go”.

The victim’s aunt, who attended the rally, told reporters: “The family would like to have justice served, so that Mark’s death is not in vain”. She described her nephew as “a loving and caring person”.

The city’s first openly gay City Council speaker, Christine Quinn joined the demonstration, along with Edie Windsor who currently has a pivotal case to win the same rights for gay couples before the Supreme Court.

The events have been a shock to an area that was at the centre of the gay rights movement in 1969, when a police raid on a gay bar sparked the Stonewall riots that came to symbolise gay resistance to intolerance and discrimination.

More recently, homophobic attacks have been on the rise and police have confirmed that bias-related crimes have risen to 22 so far this year, compared with 13 in the same period in 2012.

Elsewhere in the world homophobic attacks have also been in the news: in the UK a gay couple who were beaten by a gang of youths have urged MPs to moderate their language when debating same-sex marriage. They are worried that opponents to the new marriage laws are legitimising homophobic attitudes.

Disaster is always difficult to take in, but the Oklahoma tornado is all the harder because it was so sudden.

The US National Weather Service had classed the twister with a preliminary ranking of EF4, putting it in the second most powerful category of storm.

Survivor Ricky Stove: “We thought we died because we were inside the cellar door, we locked the cellar door once we saw it coming, it got louder and next thing you know is you see the latching coming undone and we couldn’t reach for it and it ripped open the door and just glass and debris started slamming on us and we thought we were dead to be honest”

The tornado reduced robust buildings to rubble, picking up and tossing aside cars as though they were toys.

Survivor Lando Hite: “When they started flying I just dove in a stall and that’s about the last, I got covered up with some debris and it pushed me in the shed. I was pretty lucky I suppose.”

Hospitals say they are treating almost 60 injured, including a dozen children.

The massive twister struck at the height of tornado season, and more are forecast.

Protesters gathered as the president of Myanmar arrived at the White House.

Rights groups and some US lawmakers think Obama has moved too quickly since a breakthrough in relations in 2011.

Thein Sein is the first leader of the country, also known as Burma, to make an official visit to the US in 47 years.

He admitted to President Obama that democracy reforms were a daunting challenge. Citing poverty and a lack of job opportunities, Sein agreed his people must become more familiar with democratic norms and values.

Obama agreed but insisted violence against Muslim communities must stop:“The displacement of people, the violence directed towards them needs to stop and we are prepared to work in any ways that we can with both the government of Myanmar and the international community to assure that people are getting the help that they need, but more importantly, that their rights and their dignity is recognized over the long term”.

At least 192 people died in ethnic violence last year mostly in the western state of Rakhine.

Most of the victims, and the 140,000 people made homeless in the attacks, were Muslims.
