Israel, Syria show teeth: Third cross-border shootout in week

The Israeli military said their troops had “returned precise fire” after a Syrian soldier allegedly caused damage to a military vehicle stationed in Golan Heights, near the border. The shots “most likely were stray bullets, we don’t know if it was intentional,” an Israeli spokesperson told AFP. There were no injuries following the initial shots.Soon after that the Syrian military declared in a televised statement that in response they had successfully targeted a further Israeli vehicle:”Our armed forces have destroyed an Israeli vehicle with everything that it had in it… The vehicle had crossed the ceasefire line and was moving towards the village of Bir Ajam, situated in the liberated Syrian zone [of the Golan].” Tel-Aviv denied the claims. Israel’s Army Radio however said the Tuesday incident was the third consecutive cross-border shooting this week and the military considers the incident to be concerning.Cross-border gunfire incidents have become a more frequent occurrence in recent months amid the ongoing Syrian civil war.Fire from the conflict within Syria has intermittently struck Golan Heights, with Israel generally accepting these incidents as accidental. However, Israel has occasionally retaliated for the bullets and infrequent mortar shells entering the border territory, which they captured from Syria in 1967.Airstrikes – attributed to Israel, but not confirmed – struck military posts in Syria at the beginning of May, with the blasts reportedly killing scores of soldiers.Israel has never made an official comment on the strikes, but only stated it would do everything against the prospect of its foes in Lebanon obtaining weapons smuggled through Syria.Russian President Vladimir Putin met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Sochi exactly a week ago, with both agreeing that the two -year Syrian armed conflict, if continued, could lead to “disastrous consequences” for the region. Emergency workers have been searching for survivors after a tornado ripped through a suburb of Oklahoma city in the US.

Officials have now lowered the number of deaths thought to have been caused by the storm. Twenty-four bodies are said to have been recovered. But there is a warning that more could be found.

Thunderstorms and lightning have been slowing the rescue effort.

The three kilometre wide twister, with winds of up to 320 kilometres per hour, flattened large swathes of Moore – destroying everything in its path.

The Plaza Towers Elementary School took a direct hit, its roof was ripped off and its walls collapsed. Another school and a hospital were among the other buildings levelled in Moore, which is home to around 50 thousand people.

The area was given a 16 minute warning before the tornado touched down on Monday afternoon.

US President Barack Obama has declared a major disaster in Oklahoma and has offered federal aid to boost state and local recovery efforts.

A powerful tornado has torn through a suburb of Oklahoma city in the US, leaving at least 91 people dead – including 20 children.

The three kilometre wide twister, with winds of up to 320 kilometres per hour, flattened large swathes of Moore – destroying everything in its path.

Search and rescue operations are continuing in the worst affected areas.

The Plaza Towers Elementary School took a direct hit. Its roof was ripped off and its walls collapsed. Emergency crews have been searching for two dozen children, thought to be buried in the rubble.

“The whole city looks like a debris field,” the mayor of Moore, Glenn Lewis told NBC. “It looks like we have lost our hospital. I drove by there a while ago and it’s pretty much destroyed.”

Another school and a hospital were among the other buildings levelled in Moore, which is home to around 50-thousand people.

The area was given a 16 minute warning before the tornado touched down on Monday afternoon.

US President Barack Obama has declared a major disaster in Oklahoma. He has offered federal aid to boost state and local recovery efforts.

Monday’s tornado follows others at the weekend, which injured nearly 40 people in Oklahoma.

Protesters gathered as the president of Myanmar arrived at the White House.

Rights groups and some US lawmakers think Obama has moved too quickly since a breakthrough in relations in 2011.

Thein Sein is the first leader of the country, also known as Burma, to make an official visit to the US in 47 years.

He admitted to President Obama that democracy reforms were a daunting challenge. Citing poverty and a lack of job opportunities, Sein agreed his people must become more familiar with democratic norms and values.

Obama agreed but insisted violence against Muslim communities must stop:“The displacement of people, the violence directed towards them needs to stop and we are prepared to work in any ways that we can with both the government of Myanmar and the international community to assure that people are getting the help that they need, but more importantly, that their rights and their dignity is recognized over the long term”.

At least 192 people died in ethnic violence last year mostly in the western state of Rakhine.

Most of the victims, and the 140,000 people made homeless in the attacks, were Muslims.

Iranian film ‘Le Passé’ has Palme d’Or in its sights 19/05/2013 11:56 CET

Guillaume Canet’s film “Blood Ties” has a global all-star cast.

But the French actor-director’s crime and divided loyalties saga still failed to charm the critics when it was presented out of competition at the Cannes festival.

The second week is well underway and there are already murmurs about the top prize.

Euronews correspondent Fred Ponsard says half way through the competition, speculation is rife about the Palme D’or. The latest offerings, “Shield of Straw” by Takeshi Miike and “A Castle in Italy” by Valerie Bruni-Tedeschi have not bowled over the critics and the Chinese film “A Touch Of Sin” is still favourite.

Milla Jovovich was among the stars who trod the red carpet for the screening of “A chateau in Italy” by Valerie Bruni-Tedeschi. Her mother, who has a role in the film, was also present.

Meanwhile, the festival has screened what could be the first genuinely divisive film in competition.

“Shield of Straw” by Japanese director Takashi Miike also received a mixed reception.

The high-octane blockbuster depicts a team of security officers attempt to safely move a child murder suspect to Tokyo, in the face of a billion yen reward offered for his head, by the child’s tycoon grandfather.
