There was a meeting of minds over a future Syria without President Assad but the US and Turkey differ over how to achieve it .

A day of talks between President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan were dominated by the civil war there but Obama refused to see US troops drawn into the conflict.

“There is no magic formula for dealing with the extraordinarily violent difficult situation like Syria,” said Obama. “ I reserve the option of taking additional steps both diplomatic and military.”

Prime Minister Erdogan was more forthright about his aims:

“Syria should not be an area controlled by terrorist groups. The use of chemical weapon must be prevented. Security for all the minorities must be provided. These are the priorities.”

In the end both men stressed the strength of their relations over trade, terrorism and commercial interests. But they both also voiced intentions towards the Middle East with Erdogan going ahead with a visit to Gaza and Obama announcing a trip to the West Bank.

Israel’s Prime Minister has said he will stop asking for a double bed to be installed on airplanes taking him on short flights in Europe, after the practice was brought to light by Israeli media.

His announcement at the weekend came after an Israeli TV channel revealed the Prime Minister’s Office asked for a double bed to be set up in an plane taking Netanyahu to London for Margaret Thatcher’s funeral.

The refitting came at a cost of more than $127,000 (97,000 euros) to Israeli taxpayers

The Prime Minister’s Office says Netanyahu never personally asked for a double bed on the flight and was not aware of the request. A spokesperson explained “It is important that he sleeps well in order to comply with complex tasks, but it’s possible to do so at a much lower cost, and this is what will be done.”

At a time of severe budget restrictions at home, this is not the first time Netanyahu has been forced into tightening the purse strings: earlier this year he had to cancel a contract with an ice-cream parlour after it emerged he had run up a bill of $2,700 (2,077 euros) on ice-cream, again paid for by the taxpayer.

Reports say at least seven were killed. According the the Syrian Observatory of Human Rights, one of the prime minister’s bodyguards was amongst the dead. A second guard and the driver are in critical condition.

This is the latest bombing inside the government controlled areas of Syria, following an attack on April 9 which left 15 dead.

Bersani admits he can’t form new Italian government 28/03/2013 22:03 CET

Italy’s former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has said he would stand for a fifth term – should a snap election be called.

He made the announcement before thousands of supporters in the southern city of Bari.

The veteran has returned as the clear leader of his centre-right bloc since February’s general election failed to produce a winner.

Berlusconi also repeated that he would be willing to join his political opponents in a right-left “grand coalition”.

“Either there must be an immediate, strong and stable government for Italy, or Italians should return to the ballot boxes and vote in June,” he said.

For constitutional reasons a new election cannot be called until Italy’s next president takes office in May.

There was not quite the same razzmatazz for Pier Luigi Bersani at his meeting earlier in the day in a poor Rome suburb. The centre-left leader has been under pressure from both inside and outside his party to back a government with Berlusconi.

But again he ruled out joining forces with his rival. “A grand coalition is not the right response to the country’s problems,” he said.

One opinion poll suggests a narrow Berlusconi victory, were an election to be held now.

War or prosperity? UK announces higher price tag for Afghan war while cutting vital social services

Meanwhile, the UK continues to slash domestic social services to reduce its budget deficit.UK Prime Minister David Cameron said that Britain has no plans to abandon Afghanistan: “We will be contributing £70m [US$113 million] a year to help pay for the Afghan National Security Forces.”The UK recently announced an accelerated plan to withdraw 3,800 of its 9,000 troops from Afghanistan in 2013. However, like the US, the UK will maintain an undisclosed number of soldiers in Afghanistan to help local forces with security after NATO’s mission ends in 2014. “Because of the success of our forces and the Afghan National Security Forces… we’ll be able to see troops come home in two relatively even steps – 2013 and 2014,” Prime Minister Cameron told Parliament. At least 438 British troops died during the UK’s 11-year involvement in the widely unpopular and expensive war. UK opinion polls suggest that a majority of British voters think the war is “unwinnable,” and would like to see the soldiers come home ahead of schedule. And while the UK continues to spend money in Afghanistan, even past the 2014 mark, vital domestic services are being cut. Public spending in 2011 and 2012 dropped by 1.58 per cent ($17.5 billion), the Guardian reported. The country’s healthcare budget was reduced by 1.2 percent including inflation, about $2 billion, and the education budget was cut by 5.7 percent including inflation, about $5.4 billion.Cameron has warned that Britain must continue with deep cuts to public spending to reduce the UK’s budget deficit. In 2012, local patient care was put at risk when GPs were asked to cut services including childhood immunization campaigns, out-of-hours care and minor surgery. The funding of arts organizations and museums in England will also be cut by $18.8 million starting in 2013. And more than 200 UK libraries were closed this year alone. The cuts to education have mostly affected children from poor families – one of the repercussions was the closure of primary schools’ breakfast clubs, which were run by charities that provided free breakfasts. France urges foreign military intervention in Mali after PM arrest

France urges military intervention in Mali. France has urged rapid foreign military intervention in Mali after the country’s prime minister was arrested.Mali’s Prime Minister Cheikh Modibo Diarra resigned early Tuesday. He addressed the nation on television hours after soldiers loyal to Capt. Amadou Haya Sanogo, who led a recent coup, arrested him. Diarra was getting ready to leave the country for Paris, AP reports. It’s unclear if the trip to France was planned, or if Diarra was attempting to evade capture. Separately, the UN Security Council will soon discuss a resolution that would authorize the deployment of an African-led force to oust militants who seized Mali’s northern region.Washington officials have also claimed that the US Defense Department is preparing a military operation in Mali. Sweden threatens ‘all out war’ if EU attacks snus

Sweden’s Trade Minister Ewa Bjrling said the EU faces “all out war” with Sweden if a new health directive on tobacco being hammered out at the European Commission threatens Swedish moist snuff “snus”.Brussels plays rough with Swedish snus (5 Dec 12)

“This has been a low intensity conflict for years,” Bjrling told the TT news agency after leaving a one-hour meeting with Tonio Borg, the European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy.”Depending on what the directive actually says… we’re facing all out war.”Bjrling also took up the free market aspect of snus – reportedly telling Borg that snus faces trade limitations on the common market. Last week, Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet reported that the Commission wants all tobacco products to contain at least 85 percent tobacco. Swedish snus, however, only contains about 50 percent. Bjrling said that Borg denied that the directive will demand more tobacco in tobacco products. Sweden famously got a “snus exception” when it joined the Union in 1994. Some medical experts say the use of snus, which is placed under the top lip, explains the relatively low lung cancer rate of Swedish men who might otherwise be smoking cigarettes. “I told him very specifically that the position they take on this must be based on science,” Bjrling said. “I do not think they’ve done that before, which is clear for example when they say that all snus causes cancer.”Bjrling handed a letter from several Swedish researchers to Borg during their meeting, according to TT. “I can’t expose my combat strategy yet. We have to get the MEPs to work for snus, we have to exert influence on other members of the Council, and basically target every level we can,” Bjrling said. Sweden’s Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt is scheduled to visit Brussels on Thursday for EU summit.TT/The Local/atFollow The Local on Twitter Read More
