Thief in Abu Dhabi Uses Chili Powder to Rob Jewelry Store

The new weapon of choice isn’t automatic, projectile or some sort of explosive. Nope, it’s chili powder. A man in Mussafah, Abu Dhabi robbed a jewelry store after tossing chili powder at the salesmen. Think of it as the new age smoke screen. The man, described as South Asian and in his late 20′s or early 30′s, cased the place on Sunday and selected the items he wanted, telling a salesmen that he had to return home the next day for his wedding. The following morning, he returned, spiced them and fled with $4,300 worth of gold ornaments. One salesman, who caught an eye full of chili powder, said he was in “severe pain.” Another bespectacled salesman was protected by his glasses. The man got away initially, but quick-thinking police found the chili powder’s plastic cover with a sticker from a local supermarket. The man was identified using the store’s surveillance footage. Though his diversion was innovative, his escape was pretty amateur. He won’t get a second attempt. (Source: Complex Mag) Read More

Rhonda Washington Allegedly Stabs Husband Over Facebook Post

Rhonda Washington and her husband agree on one thing: She stabbed him during a fight. However, they can’t agree on whether it was because she was mad that he was high on PCP (her story) or that she didn’t like a post on his Facebook page (his allegation). Regardless of who’s right, Washington, 33, of Bryan, Texas, was arrested Thursday morning on a felony charge after police said she stabbed her husband with a knife,The Eagle reported. Washington allegedly told authorities that her husband, whose name has not been released, was high on PCP when they got into an argument about his drug use at their home. She said when things got physical, she jabbed him in the hand with her keys. However, police told KWTX-TV that the husband did not appear to be intoxicated. The husband claims his wife stabbed him in the hand with a knife after becoming upset about something on his Facebook page, The New York Daily News reported. Washington was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second-degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison. As of Thursday, she was still in the Brazos County Jail in lieu of $999 bail. (Source: Huffington Post) My Opinion: Either way this couple has some issues. The two stories are so different, getting stabbed with keys or a knife seems drastically different. You’d think they would be able to pretty easily prove the story either way. We’ll see how it plays out. Read More

After weeks of rain, sun comes out for Olympic torch’s final leg in host city London

LONDON – The Olympic torch has begun its tour of London — and to everyone’s relief, the weather is co-operating.After weeks of unseasonably chilly temperatures and miserable rain, the sun came out Saturday as thousands of people turned out to watch the flame begin its seven-day trip of the Olympic host city. The torch arrived late Friday in the city with a dramatic entrance, abseiled from a helicopter by a Royal Marine to the Tower of London on the shore of the River Thames. After a night locked inside the Jewel House of the 11th century landmark, the torch started a journey through London that took it from a historic ship to a shiny new shopping mall. From the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, the home of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), the torch was carried to the Cutty Sark, a newly restored 140-year-old ship docked in the Thames.Phillips Idowu, a champion triple jumper for Team Great Britain, then took the torch to the Westfield mall, Europe’s biggest, next to the Olympic Park.Saturday’s torch relay also included stints from London’s youngest and oldest torchbearers: 12-year-old Chester Chambers, and 101-year-old Fauja Singh. Like most other torchbearers, they were nominated by their communities. The torch, which has already travelled across Britain for more than 60 days, will continue to tour London’s streets until it ends its journey at the Olympic Stadium for the opening ceremony in the capital on July 27. © The Canadian Press, 2012 Read More
