Claire McCaskill: Who is Grover Norquist?

Sen. Claire McCaskill posed a pretty good question on “Meet the Press” this morning: Grover who?”I met him for the first time this morning,” McCaskill said of the Americans for Tax Reform leader. “Nice to meet him. But, you know, who is he?”People like Norquist, McCaskill concluded, almost make her feel sorry for John Boehner. “There is incredible pressure on him from a base of his party that is unreasonable about this. And he’s got to decide: Is his speakership more important, or is the country more important?”Norquist, meanwhile, compared the president to a big baby. “It’s the president who’s threatening to raise taxes on the middle class if he doesn’t stamp his feet and get his way,” he said. The solution: C-SPAN!”He should get into a room with C-SPAN cameras there and negotiate, so instead of hearing rhetoric like this — that was all show, no economics. Let’s have it in front of C-SPAN cameras,” Norquist said. “And if the Republicans are being reasonable, we’ll see that. If they’re not, we’ll see that. You’ve got to have cameras in that room; none of this press releases after.” Continue Reading… Read More

Ricky Martin: Puerto Rico Needs A ‘Serious’ Statehood Plebiscite

At a time when statehood supporters in Puerto Rico are seeing new allies pop up in states like Ohio, helping to push their agenda in front of the U.S. Congress, one of island’s best-known, Ricky Martin, is calling for a democratic movement that truly represents Puerto Ricans. The singer and actor in the recent Broadway musical “Evita” says he’s convinced the last referendum election doesn’t reflect public sentiment.“It is so mixed,” the Puerto Rican star told The Huffington Post Thursday night during a meeting with reporters in his dressing room. “It is apparent but is not. I think democracy must be respected. We must have a plebiscite, a serious plebiscite, where a simple question of ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ is answered.”Read More…

Joe Arpaio Believes He Can ‘Get Along Great With The Hispanics’

In the wake of his reelection to a sixth term as sheriff of Maricopa County in Arizona, Joe Arpaio is ready to reach out to “the Hispanics” in the local community — who have generally not been a fan of the controversial official’s policies on immigration.“I can get along great with the Hispanics,” he said in an interview with the Arizona Republic. “In fact, I sure would like to meet them, even the politicians, maybe in the back room or whatever, have a couple of beers and try to explain. But they need to understand that I enforce the laws. I want to listen to them and hear their problems. I want them to tell me what their problems are. Maybe we can come up with a solution.”While Arpaio won his most recent election, he didn’t win overwhelmingly — 49.3 percent of the voters did not pick him — which may be why Arpaio is trying to show his “kinder, gentler” side. The long-time foe of undocumented immigration is even saying that lawmakers should “look into” passing the Dream Act, which would provide a path to citizenship for young undocumented individuals.Read More…

Filibuster reform: The Senate is filled with hypocrites

In their war to preserve the filibuster, Senate Republicans have deployed two main arguments, neither of which makes much sense. The first is a threat to gum up the Senate even more than it is now if their right to stymie things is diminished. That’s bit like a child refusing to clean up his room, then threatening to make his room even messier if his parents don’t abide his temper tantrum. The other argument is that Democrats are being hypocritical in calling for reform, because they defended the filibuster just a few short years ago when they were in the minority, and thus their efforts should be dismissed out of hand. “Then-Sen. Obama thought it would be wrong to make the changes when the Republicans were in the majority; then-Sen. [Joe] Biden thought it was a bad idea when the Democrats were in the minority; and Harry Reid thought it was an awful idea when he was in the minority because he said no one group should be able to run roughshod over the other group,” said Wyoming Republican Sen. John Barrasso, who holds the No. 4 position in the GOP leadership.Continue Reading… Read More
