Amanda Knox appeals to Meredith Kercher’s family

In an exclusive interview with ABC’s Diane Sawyer, 25-year-old Amanda Knox tells her side of the story that made her an international headline six years ago. Knox was convicted for the murder of her study abroad roommate, Meredith Kercher, and released in 2011 when the charges were dismissed. Italian courts recently overturned Knox’s acquittal, however, and viewers are reminded that “every word she says here and in the pages of her new book…could affect her freedom.”In the interview, Knox recounts the night of Kercher’s death, maintaining that Knox was at her Italian boyfriend’s home that night. When she learned of the death, the Italian media scrutinized her reaction as callous. Knox admits to Sawyer,”I wish I could have been more mature about it.” “I felt very lost, very alone and very vulnerable,” she explained. “My friend had been murdered, and it could just have been easily been me.”Knox also appealed to Kercher’s family, saying “Eventually I can have their permission to pay my respects at her grave and I would also like them to know that she talked about them to me,” she said.Watch Part I of the interview, below:Continue Reading… Read More

Fiction: “Double Take” by Jessica Francis Kane

Six weeks after his college roommate died, Ben thought he saw him in London: the square jaw and pale skin, the round eyes and devilish grin. But it was only a stranger in the crowd on Oxford Street. In the weeks that followed, Ben saw lots of people who reminded him of Mike. It seemed the city was suddenly populated with dozens of men who shared his fondness for gray parkas, cheap tight jeans, baseball caps and bargain boots.Of course, Ben didn’t know if these items were still in Mike’s wardrobe when he died. He hadn’t seen him for two years when he got word that Mike had drowned off the coast of Fire Island. He was just remembering him as he’d looked at Yale.Ben flew in from London for the memorial service in New York. He couldn’t take any time off, but with the time difference he was able to make the trip work. He left Heathrow Friday night and arrived in the city an hour before the service Saturday afternoon. Saturday night he spent with college friends. A few of them took Mike’s mother, Maryanne, out for dinner — he remembered a quiet Italian place — then Sunday he woke up early, went to a movie with friends (one they told themselves Mike would have liked), and caught a late afternoon flight back to London. There was a mishap with the car service and he rode to LaGuardia in a long white limo only perfunctorily cleaned from its stag party service the night before. Back in London, he took a cab straight to work. It was a whirlwind, but he was glad he’d gone.Continue Reading… Read More

“New Girl’s” Jake Johnson is a big tease

On Fox’s “New Girl,” Jake Johnson plays Nick Miller, the grouchy, sweet roommate who’s an old soul trapped in a thirtysomething bartender’s body in a will-they-won’t-they relationship with Jess (Zooey Deschanel). And then there’s his great leaping technique. Johnson spoke with us about Nick’s evolution from the cynic to the sensitive guy, his relationship with Jess, meeting Rob Reiner and the beauty of Nick and Jess Halloween costumes.Nick has changed a lot. When the show started, he was sort of the straight man. He’s become a lot stranger.I’ve heard that in the show’s conception they were going to have Nick be very grounded. And as it went on, they realized that something they really liked in Nick was when he would go crazy and get really weird. I was talking to Brett Baer about this: They also realized that Lamorne Morris [Winston] is very good as a voice of reason. And there’s a scene we were talking about in season one, when Max [Greenfield, a.k.a. Schmidt] and I were pitching Zooey’s character on how to deal with Dermot Mulroney. And Lamorne’s line was like, “Or we could just handle it like an adult, which I’m sure you’re not going to do.” And they said in post-production they were watching it and all cracking up, and they realized Lamorne is really good at that. They really like it when Jake goes bananas, so I think they just started making more of a change. We switched paths a little bit.Continue Reading… Read More
