A “Gossip Girl” star becomes Jeff Buckley: “I was not his most rabid fan”

Penn Badgley didn’t go into his role as the late singer Jeff Buckley with much of a plan. “I did not have any clear-cut method to the point that sometimes I’d be like, ‘What the fuck am I doing?,’” he told Salon at his hotel recently before a Tribeca Film Festival of “Greetings from Tim Buckley.”"I’d just be like, ‘Wait a second, there’s no rules that anyone’s asking me to follow. No one’s checking in with me.’”Part of Badgley’s liberation in playing Buckley came from the fact that there wasn’t any input from the Buckley estate. “Greetings from Tim Buckley,” which takes place before Buckley’s rise to fame and premature death (by drowning, at 30), does not use any of Buckley’s music; the filmmakers did not obtain the rights to his music. Indeed, a competing Buckley biopic titled “Mystery White Boy,” endorsed by Buckley’s mother Mary Guibert and set to star “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” stage actor Reeve Carney, is in development at present.Guibert has been a gatekeeper for Buckley’s legacy on film, rejecting proposed projects about her son both for being too truthful and not truthful enough.Continue Reading… Read More

My life on the streets

As a young lady, my mother dreamed of becoming a pianist. She showed enough promise at this that when her father lost a leg to diabetes and could no longer work, her piano teacher offered to continue giving her lessons for free. Her mother would hear nothing of it.”We don’t need any charity,” She bristled.Of course she was lying. A sudden loss beyond her control. A need for a little help over the hump. Theirs was as honest a case for charity as any. But her sense of pride would not let her admit it. So, my mother’s musical development came to an abrupt halt and instead of her dream career, bathed in the footlights of a concert stage, one thing after another, she ended up struggling to raise my brother and me on her own.The arc of these events conveyed to me for the first time that a separate set of rules exists for the poor. Pride, for example–which they took pains in Sunday school to drum into my head as being among the deadly sins–was, for the poor, a virtue. And Charity, championed–during those same Sunday sessions–as one of the highest virtues of the heart was, in practice, a thing tinged with shame.Continue Reading… Read More

Iranian ‘time machine’ can ‘predict’ oil prices and wars

Ali Razeghi, 27, has submitted his invention to the state-run Centre for Strategic Inventions for registration. The device is called “The Aryayek Time Traveling Machine,” FARS news agency reported. Razeghi said he worked on his creation for the last 10 years, resulting in a desktop-computer-sized machine that can “predict five to eight years of the future life of any individual, with 98 percent accuracy.”The man, who has 179 other inventions under his belt, eyes governmental applications for his prediction device with uses both civilian and military.”Naturally a government that can see five years into the future would be able to prepare itself for challenges that might destabilize it,” he explained. “As such we expect to market this invention among states as well as individuals once we reach a mass-production stage.”Razeghi also claimed to have beaten competitors working on similar devices: “The Americans are trying to make this invention by spending millions of dollars on it where I have already achieved it by a fraction of the cost.”He added that he is concerned about industrial espionage, as other nations will be eager to learn his secrets. “The reason that we are not launching our prototype at this stage is that the Chinese will steal the idea and produce it in millions overnight,” he said.Predicting the future, even on relatively narrow issues, is a notoriously complex task. It usually requires creating an accurate computer model of a system that takes into account numerous factors, and often requires plenty of computational power. Predicting a future event in its entirety is virtually impossible with existing technology. Read More
