The railway workers of the SNCF have followed the example of air traffic controllers: from 7pm on Wednesday until 8am on Friday, the railway network will be disrupted by a strike. The call from unions hostile to rail reform has been heard: on average only four trains in ten are running on the TGV and RER routes.

International lines are the least affected by the strike. Traffic is only reduced to Switzerland (one train in two) and Italy (one train in three). The Eurostar (to London), Thalys (to Brussels and Amsterdam) and Alléo (to Germany) lines are not affected.

The South-East TGV line and the province-province line are the most affected with one train in three running on average, according to an SNCF notice. For the TGV North, the expectation is that four trains in ten will run, followed by one train in two and two trains in three for the Atlantic and East lines respectively.

On the major intercity lines, three trains in ten are running.

At a regional level, the SNCF expects “more than four TER trains in 10” to run on average across the country, although there will be some disparity between regions.

In the Île-de-France region and Paris, the suburban RER network is widely affected, with one train in three for lines B and D, and one train in two for lines C and E. Only line A will function as normal.

The SNCF has provided travellers with phone numbers and websites, as well as smart phone applications so that they may stay up to date in real time with the situation.

Turkish PM blames extremists for anti-government… 03/06/2013 13:21 CET

A night of relative calm descended on Turkey after four days of protests that left two people dead and one in critical condition.

Police and protesters engaged in a stand-off in Istanbul overnight as the Kesk trade union federation accused the government of “state terror.”

The union has announced a two- day strike. The confederation claimed the government is undermining democracy.

Schools and universities will affected along with government offices.

The unrest began on Friday after police cracked down on a demonstration in Istanbul, which quickly turned into a nationwide protest against the government.

Those opposed to Prime Minister Recep Tayipp Erdogan’s decade-long rule claim he is trying to impose Islamic reforms on a secular nation.

Germans are renowned for their stoical attitude. But after the darkest winter in over 40 years, even the hardiest residents are being tested as rain and floods replace the traditional warm summer.

The national weather office has issued extreme weather warnings after 178 percent more rain fell in May than the year before.

A typical low weather pattern is forcing clouds up the Alps, where they cool off and shed heavy rain. But this time it’s lasted for weeks, washing out the southern states of Bavaria, Baden-Wurttemberg, Lower Saxony and other regions.

Trees have fallen as the soil has weakened, crops have been ruined and basements flooded. A cyclist drowned in Hannover after being swept away.

Switzerland has also been affected, with ships banned from the Rhine in Basel. 100 more litres of rain per square meter have been forecast between Saturday and Sunday.

Offshore wealth reaches $8.5tn despite pressure on tax havens

Offshore assets, those booked out of the investor’s home country, have grown by billions of dollars in 2012, Financial Times reports. Switzerland is crowning the list of jurisdictions where the funds are being kept, the new research from BCG revealed. Investors appear to prefer the risks related to keeping funds in tax havens against the guaranteed tithe on their fortunes by the tax authorities at home. A number of  information exchange agreements have been forced on offshore jurisdictions by governments like the US, the EU and the UK, since the leading economies are striving to cope with budget deficits at home and demand more transparency. According to experts cited by the Financial Times, there seems to be more for the investors in the offshore centres than an easy way to save as much money as possible. The strong performance of the offshore centres amid a growing crackdown on evasion is seen by some experts as evidence that investors are using offshore centres for reasons other than hiding money. According to the BCG study, the major inflow of money to the offshore centers over the next five years is likely to come from the rich in emerging economies. These investors chose banks in Switzerland or Liechtenstein for stability and security reasons, rather than for tax evasion. “The raft of tax information disclosure deals signed by traditional European banking centres have not had a significant impact on the amount of money and assets held there which supports the idea that only a small fraction of overseas money held in those jurisdictions is for tax avoidance or evasion,” the head of tax, at Pinsent Masons law firm Jason Collins told the Financial Times. He named insecurity of domestic banks among the reasons why investors transfer their money to jurisdictions like Switzerland.  “While it is true that some individuals will use banking centres like Switzerland or Liechtenstein to avoid or evade taxes, many are using these banking centres for the security they provide their assets.” Both Luxembourg and Switzerland marked a significant decline in wealth floating from Western European countries and North America. Meanwhile UK based charity Oxfam, has recently released a report saying that individuals are holding some $18.47 trillion in tax havens around the world. According to the organization’s estimates, tax lost in tax havens is enough to end global poverty twice over. Read More
