French magistrates decided on Friday not to place IMF chief Christine Lagarde under formal investigation over her role in a 285 million euros arbitration payment made to a supporter of former president Nicolas Sarkozy.

Lagarde was instead given the status of a “supervised witness”, after she was questioned on her 2008 decision as Sarkozy’s finance minister to use arbitration to settle a court battle between the state and businessman Bernard Tapie.

“My explanations answered questions raised about the decisions that I had made at the time,” Lagarde told reporters outside the Paris court. “My status as a supervised witness is not a surprise for me because I always acted in the interest of the state and according to the law.”

Explosions and gunfire rocked the Afghan capital on Friday as the Taliban launched a coordinated attack on a UN compound used by the CIA.

A suicide car-bomb blast was followed by several other explosions as the militants exchanged gunfire with Afghan troops supported by Norwegian special forces.

A Taliban spokesman said the attack was aimed at foreigners who were training Afghan security members.

There was no immediate report of casualties.

One witness told how security cameras helped him escape: “An explosion happened, and when it happened I went to my office to check the security cameras and I saw four people running to the site. When I saw the four attackers we quickly got out of there in case they came in,” said a local restaurant owner.

The Taliban announced a ‘Spring Offensive’ in April saying it would target foreign military bases and diplomatic areas.

Concern is mounting about how the 350,000 members of the Afghan security forces will cope with the militants after most foreign NATO-led combat troops have left by the end of next year.

Parts of Europe still reeling from severe weather 13/03/2013 12:06 CET

May continues to bring scant springtime sunshine across western Europe. Instead, unsettled and unusual weather conditions have hit large parts of the continent.

Heavy rain and melting snow has caused rivers to overflow and forced hundreds of people out of their homes in eastern Norway.

In London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Paris temperatures are between five and 10 degrees centigrade lower than expected at this time of year. The snow ploughs are still being used in the Alps.

“I have never seen this in my entire life, and even an old man of 90 years old has never seen this. It is very weird,” said one man in Vosges in eastern France as he gestured at the snow.

It is not expected to be any higher than 12 degrees anywhere in Switzerland over the weekend – except Ticino in the south, where residents can look forward to what may feel like a scorching 17 compared to the icy conditions in some parts of the country.

Gunmen have been seen prowling through a Sunni district of the Lebanese city of Tripoli after fighting between factions supporting rival groups in neighbouring Syria’s civil war.

Five people were killed and more than 50 wounded on Thursday night.

Fears are growing the fighting could reignite Lebanon’s own 15-year-long civil conflict.

“The seeds of war exist in Lebanon. If the situation in Syria gets worse, the tensions will flare up and the seeds will sprout,” warned political analyst Younes Awdeh.

Lebanon’s Sunni Muslims tend to back Syria’s rebels while the country’s Shia support Syria’s President Assad whose Alawite sect is an offshoot of Shi’ite Islam.

Along with the sectarian tensions the influx of Syrian refugees is also increasing pressure on the Lebanese people living near the Lebanon-Syria border.

Local estimates claim more than 470,000 Syrians have fled the conflict and are seeking refuge in camps there.

British fighter jets escort Pakistan passenger plane after incident
Two men have been arrested after British fighter jets escorted a Pakistani passenger plane to Stansted Airport near London.

The Pakistan International Airlines craft was en route from Lahore to Manchester in the north of England.

A passenger told reporters that after the plane landed, the pilot announced there had been a threat, which is why they had put down early.

Police went onboard and handcuffed and removed two men, reported to be aged 30 and 41.

They are being held on suspicion of endangerment of an aircraft.

It comes just hours after a BA plane was forced to make an emergency landing after an engine caught fire. The incidents were not related.

Britain is on high alert following the killing of a soldier in London on Wednesday.

Oklahoma tornado: 24 bodies recovered, say officials 21/05/2013 09:05 CET

The recovery effort after the devastating tornado in the US state of Oklahoma earlier this week is being aided by hundreds of volunteers.

After seeing the destruction some people travelled long distances to help the victims in Moore.

Armed with brooms, mops and other tools they were organised into teams.

“This is such a tragedy, and I just felt for these people and I just hope that we can provide something to give them hope,” said one young woman.

Two primary schools were hit by the storm. One, Plaza Towers, was completely levelled. Seven children were killed, most of them suffocated after being buried as the building collapsed.

The local mayor has praised the media for alerting the public to the tornado before it struck.

“There were several hundred people in this building when this happened, so you’ve got to wonder how only seven people died in this school and how many people survived. How in the world could you possibly survive in a situation like this?” said the Mayor of Moore, Glen Lewis.

Federal grants are already available to help subsidise the cost of building storm shelters.

The mayor now says there are plans to make it compulsory for all new homes to have them.

President Obama is due to visit Moore on Sunday.

A British Airways plane was forced to make an emergency landing after smoke was seen coming from one of its engines.

Amateur footage shows the cover of one of the engines had apparently come loose.

Passengers on board the Heathrow to Oslo flight said they heard a popping sound from both sides of the plane shortly before seeing flames on the right hand side.

The Airbus A319 was only ten minutes into its flight when the pilot calmly announced he was returning to Heathrow airport.

With fire services on the runway standing by, the aircraft landed safely.

All 75 passengers plus crew were evacuated via emergency chutes, three people were treated for minor injuries..

BA have said a full investigation will be held into what they said was a technical fault.

London’s Metropolitan Police said they were not treating it as a terrorist incident.
