“The New Mind of the South”: Not your daddy’s Dixie

Tracy Thompson, a former newspaper reporter born and raised in Georgia, first got the idea for her book, “The New Mind of the South,” when a cousin passed on a startling bit of family history. Their shared ancestor, Thomas Thompson, was a Union man. Thompson clan legend held that Thomas had briefly pretended to support the Union, but only because he hoped to be reimbursed for property confiscated by General Sherman. Thomas was in truth a staunch anti-Confederate according to documents held in the National Archive. Tracy Morgan responds to Alec Baldwin’s racially charged rant

Alec Baldwin made headlines yet again this weekend after allegedly calling a photographer for the New York Post a racial slur.

On Tuesday, his former “30 Rock” costar and comedian Tracy Morgan called a North Carolina radio show to talk about it.

Baldwin is being accused of calling black photographer G.N. Miller a “crackhead” and a “coon” after a verbal altercation with a reporter from the Post.

In the interview, Morgan sounds quiet and cautious while chastising Baldwin, saying, “If he called somebody a coon, he should apologize.” Adding, “There’s no excuse. You’re in your 50s.”

Morgan is no stranger to hate speech controversy. In 2011, the comedian caught serious heat in the press after a homophobic rant during a stand-up set went public.

He has since apologized.

The New York Police Department’s Hate Crime Task Force is currently investigating Baldwin’s tirade.

delivering no clear educational benefits.Snell has a master’s in communication from Cal State, publishes
widely on school choice and foster care reform, and works with
federal, state, and local officials to implement reforms designed
to give more power to individual kids and parents. Read her bio
here.Snell will be interviewed by Reason TV’s Tracy Oppenheimer live
from our new studio in Los Angeles. The topics covered will include
the Obama administration’s national standards, pushback by teachers
unions against school choice, the efficacy of letting parents and
kids select their schools, and whether vouchers, charters, and
similar reforms don’t go far enough in challenging the educational
status quo. Read More
